Rafael Nadal and Juan Monaco win Qatar Open doubles crown [PHOTOS]

Rafael Nadal and Juan Monaco captured their first ATP World Tour team title Friday as they defeated  Julian Knowle and Philipp Oswald 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. Congratulations, Rafico!

Rafael Nadal: “To start the season with a title, even if it’s in doubles, is a great feeling. Playing with one of my best friends on tour is always very special.”

Juan Monaco: “It’s an amazing feeling. I’m really happy and hopefully next year I can play again with my friend.”

Our champ joined forces with countryman Marc Lopez to triumph in Doha in 2009 and ’11, as well as with Albert Costa in ’05. Rafa captured his ninth doubles title overall. He is one of three players to win both singles and doubles titles in Doha, joining Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker.

  1. If he’s not THE best, Rafa is certainly one of the best doubles players on tour due to his heavy topspin forehand, powerful backhand drives, superior net game and lefty slice serve. I wish that more of his doubles matches – rare as they are – were televised, because they’re so much fun to watch. VAMOS!!!

  2. Was hoping someone would post a link to watch the match. Couldn’t stream at my high school, apps outdated – had to settle for watching the score bleep and cheering (students in my library couldn’t understand what I was cheering about since they didn’t see anyone playing . . .) No ESPN3. Go Rafa!
