“I came back home. I didn’t practise tennis for a while. I went out with family and friends. I was able to go to a party on Saturday with my friends. I was able to go to the beach few days in Mallorca. I worked a little bit on my physical performance in the gym. But I didn’t practise tennis there. I needed a few days off for my back after a lot of stress in Roland Garros.”

Rafael Nadal leads the ATP World Tour with four titles this season (Doha, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Roland Garros). The Spaniard is followed by three-time champions Grigor Dimitrov (whose titles have come on three different surfaces), Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic. Four other players have won two titles so far this season.

“Personally I feel that I am doing things better,” Nadal told reporters during his pre-tournament press conference on Saturday. “I am able to move myself more free now. I’m not scared about my knee. That’s the most important thing for me.

“I am not going to start from zero because I’ve already played a lot on this surface in my career, but it is like a restart. “I have been practicing hard, practising more hours than I usually do, and I am confident that I can do it again. I’m not talking about winning [the tournament], I’m talking about playing better than I have over last couple of years on grass.”
