Mumbai, India’s City of Dreams, has been named as one of the four cities that will play host to the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) and the team based there will be headlined by our champion Rafael Nadal. He will be joined by tennis legend Pete Sampras, former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, Gael Monfils, Rohan Bopanna, Sania Mirza and Fabrice Santoro.

A total sum of $23,975,000 was raised for the four teams. Organisers are calling the IPTL “the answer to a growing demand for world class tennis in the Middle East and Asia” and it’s set to take place from November 27 to December 14, 2014.

The IPTL will not be a traditional tennis tournament in that the rules will be different. Matches will be played on a Home and Away basis, in categories such as men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and legends’ singles. Each set will be shorter, with a one point decider at deuce and a tie breaker played at 5-5. More details about the format are to be revealed, so stay tuned.

Team Mumbai (7-9 December): Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras, Ana Ivanovic, Gael Monfils, Rohan Bopanna, Sania Mirza and Fabrice Santoro.

Team Bangkok (2-4 December): Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Carlos Moya, Daniel Nestor and Kirsten Flipkens.
