Rafael Nadal defeated Albert Montanes in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals in Rio. His girlfriend Maria Francisca Perello was on hand to cheer him on. Rafa also helped honor Brazilian retired champion Gustavo ‘Guga’ Kuerten after his win. Watch the videos from the match and the ceremony here.
In his press conference, Rafa mentioned that his back was bothering him a little, but not enough to impede his performance. As seen in one of the photos below, Rafa had blue strapping tape to support his back. We hope that his back will not cause him further problems. Rafa next plays later today against Joao Sousa.
