Rafael Nadal defeated German wildcard Peter Gojowczyk 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final at Doha. This will be Rafa’s second trip to the singles finals in six appearances, his first ending in a three-set loss to Nikolay Davydenko in 2010. Rafa has won doubles at this tournament thrice. His opponent in the final is Frenchman Gael Monfils.
Rafa’s performance has improved over the course of the week, with his quarterfinal match against Gulbis being his most consistent showing yet. However, the semifinal followed a different pattern. The first set saw Rafa battling his way from 0-3 to even it out, only to lose the set at 6-4. The second set was Rafa’s from the beginning; up a double break, he made swift work of closing it out at 6-2. The third set was fairly routine in Rafa fashion, 6-3. Stay tuned for more photos and information about the final.
Congratulations Rafa!
