Rafael Nadal defeats Carlos Berlocq in third round at Shanghai

Rafael Nadal made a quick job of dismissing Argentinian Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 7-6 in the third round at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Thursday. He will move on to the quarterfinals.

Rafa’s game seemed to have improved since his final in Beijing. He broke three times in the first set to take it at 6-1. Berlocq stepped up his game in the second, but deterring Rafa was not in the cards this day. Our champ extended his unbeaten streak against Carlos to 3-0.

“I was happy the way I played at the end,” said Nadal, who wore five shirts due to humid conditions during the match. “I think I played a fantastic first set. In the second set, I felt a little bit more tired. He had a big opportunity in the tie-break with the 5 2. So I was lucky I played three great points in that moment. Unfortunately for him, he hit a double fault. At the end it was close, emotional. I’m very happy to be through.”

“Berlocq is a great example of player who never gives up, a player who has always improved throughout his career. He is a good guy, a good fighter.”

Rafa next faces  Stanislas Wawrinka, over whom he holds a FedEx ATP Head2Head advantage of 10-0.
