Rafael Nadal defeated Colombian Santiago Giraldo in R1 to advance to the second round in Beijing, where he will meet his US Open fourth round opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Although Kohlschreiber took the first set off Rafa in R4 at the US Open at a time when Rafa has been unstoppable, Rafa defeated him with relative ease in the following three sets. Rafa has a solid lead in the head to head series, winning 10 times and losing only once to the German, on grass at Halle in 2012.  The winner of the match will play the winner of the match between Fabio Fognini-Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter final.
