Rafa and Berdych have met a total of 17 times, with Rafa holding a solid 14-3 lead in the series. The three times that Berdych did defeat Rafa were all on hard surfaces, including Cincinnati in 2005. Rafa has defeated Berdych seven times on hard courts, including in Cincinnati as well, the most recent being in Indian Wells this year. Their last meeting, however, was in the Rome semifinals. Rafa remains undefeated by Berdych since 2006.
Rafa is 13-0 on hard courts this year and 14-1 vs. Top 10 opponents. He is playing in his 49th career ATP Masters 1000 semi-final and is looking to reach back-to-back hard court finals in consecutive weeks for the first time in his career. Rafa is 51-3 overall this season and 8-2 in finals. He is in the semi-finals for the third time (2008-09, lost to Djokovic both times). Also reached quarter-finals in 2010 (l. to Baghdatis) and 2011 (l. to Fish). Did not play last year (knee injury).
