Rafael Nadal’s singles campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics came to an end after Novak Djokovic defeated him in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, on the Philippe Chatrier court.
Despite the crowd’s enthusiastic support for Rafa, the Serb showed no mercy, especially in the first set. It’s important to remember that Rafa has played very little in the past couple of months and is currently dealing with a thigh injury, so he was realistic even before the match and acknowledged that Novak is the clear favorite.
Although Rafa started to play better in the second set and gained momentum after coming back from 0-4 down, he couldn’t match Novak’s dominance in crucial moments. The world No. 1 managed to steady himself and finish the match.
Rafa’s focus now shifts to doubles, where he and Carlos Alcaraz will face the Dutch pair Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof in the second round, having already won their first-round match.
We are proud of Rafa and wish him all the best in doubles!

Everyone needs to remember that when Rafa is healthy and at his best, no one can beat Rafa at Roland Garros. Roland Garros is Rafa’s kingdom where Rafa has reigned supreme for 14 years. Novak Djokovic could never defeat a healthy Rafa at Roland Garros. The titles for Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros have only materialized because of Rafa’s injuries or absence. Novak Djokovic won in round 2 of the Olympics only because Rafa is still nursing several injuries.
Completely agree with you, Ron K. That’s why Novak Djokovic has continued to say he is relishing and hoping for the match with Rafa in Round 2 of the Olympics many days before he and Rafa played. Djokovic knew Rafa is not at his best and nursing several injuries, so he was licking his chops and going for the kill. Rafa didn’t want to disappoint his fans and the event, so he chose to play, even though we knew Rafa came close to pulling out of the singles event even before the match against Marton Fuscovics.
Two titans of the sport facing off. Respect to Rafa for giving it his best shot. He never really found his game until it was too late. Then it was too much of a mountain to climb. Nevertheless, I salute our champ for the fight. Always with you Rafa!
Two titans of tennis indeed. Only difference is that Rafa is LOVED in Paris. Djokovic can only be respected. Djokovic desperately craves love from Paris but sadly will never get it.
Novak is respected, but Rafa is loved. I was dreading today’s match. At least, the second set was competitive. Novak is only 11 months younger, but Rafa is much older physically. I hope Rafa and Carlos can win another match, but I am rooting for Carlos to win the gold. Rafa will always have that incredible memory as a flag bearer. It was the ultimate sign of respect from the French.
Oops, I meant torch bearer, of course.
Totally agree. Rafa is well recognized in Paris and throughout the world for his out of this world achievements: 14 Roland Garros titles, two Olympic gold medals, nearly unbeatable when Rafa is at his best. Rafa is the gold standard of tennis and set the bar so high.
Rafa, today was not your day, but we are so proud of your tremendous career achievements.🥰 14 grand slam titles at the same major that will never be matched by anyone in history, 2 Olympic golds, 22 total grand slam titles, 4 grand slam titles with no sets lost, 1 career golden slam, 2 career slams, 81 wins in a row on clay, the list goes on. Not to mention, the honor of carrying the Olympics torch in the Paris olympics ceremonies, and an inspiration to so many current and future champions (Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff). Your popularity and love from the world is unmatched. Keep going, and go for more gold with your compatriot Alcaraz.
Very well said Jenny B. A tremendous record achieved by a tremendous person. A truly incomparable combination. Unique in the history of the sport.
Totally agree! We will never see anyone as great as Rafa again in this sport. Carlos will emulate Rafa with many victories and slam titles but not 14 French Open titles.
Rafa, stay healthy and go for the gold in doubles with Alcaraz. Your fans LOVE you!
Good luck for the Doubles. Vamos Rafa❤️❤️❤️
Win or loss. It doesn’t matter. Rafa is the GOAT of tennis. That dude won my heart since 2005. He already has 2 Olympic Gold Medals in the bag.
VAMOS Rafa no 1 always
When you find the true problem, you will find the true solution. For Nadal’s case, it’s retirement.
Hey loser, Rafa decides on his career path. Why are you such a retarded idiot?
Much respect between those two.
Rafa showed his fight in the second set however he’s not prime time ready at the moment. Djoker was clinical.
At least now Rafa can focus on the doubles.
Stay healthy, Rafa. Doubles awaits👏👍💪🎾🍀❤️
As always so proud of Rafa and the way he fought until the end. I thought he looked abit tired the first set, so probably what others mentioned maybe too much tennis with both doubles and singles. Rafa played 2 1/2 hours just yesterday. Djokovic had a much easier route (double specialist in the first round and then a full day’s rest between matches). Rafa looked much better in the second set and made me believe (as always) that he might manage a win. Now he can focus on the doubles! Vamos Rafa!!!
Happy to have seen Rafa is back at his best. That is not enough to beat Djokovic but you only need to look at their trophy lists to acknowledge that Djokovic is.of another level and more surface all-round. Vamos Rafa for doubles!!
You are much loved and respected for fair play he will never reach your standards love
Rafa always fights to the end of any match he plays because he is and always has been a proud warrior but he is not playing at his best after the last two injury strewn years. At his best, no-one could ever beat Rafa on clay, not even Djokovic!
No-one will ever dominate on clay the way Rafa did for eighteen years! Unfortunately, he has had to deal with a series of injuries over the years. Yet, despite that, he still managed to secure 22 Majors. People who didn’t know or understand Rafa said he was finished ten years ago. Yet he recovered his form and confidence to keep on winning Majors and Masters for another eight years! Such was his strength of character.
Djokovic has hardly been troubled with injuries by comparison. So he has been able to play more Majors and Masters than Rafa in the last twenty years. Djokovic has been very fortunate in that respect, whereas Rafa has not.
Well said! Rafa has won so many French opens that Federer and Djokovic have only been able to win so few titles there relatively speaking. Paris loves Rafa so much to bestow two very tangible honors to Rafa: the steel statue of Rafa outside of Philippe chatrier court, and the opportunity to carry the Olympics torch during the Paris opening ceremonies. Rafa will forever be linked to Roland Garros in the most positive light. We are so proud of Rafa!
Hey loser, Rafa was far from his best. When Rafa finds his game and gets back to his best level, the wins and titles will come back. It’s taking longer because of all the injuries. Djokovic stands no chance against an in form and healthy Rafa. Not to mention, 99.99999999% of the stadium and world were rooting for Rafa. So much love for Rafa our champion. Djokovic will never get any love from the public…so sad.
