Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud Nadal and Ruud beat the French pairing of Theo Arribage and Roman Safiullin 6-4 3-6 12-1 at the Swedish Open to reach the semi-finals in Bastad. Ruudal saved a match point at 9-10 down, before winning the next two points to get over the line.
“I think we had some fun,” Rafa said. “It has been an emotional match at the end, a good level of tennis against two good players. We enjoy it and the crowd was amazing, a full crowd in a doubles match, that’s fantastic. Just enjoying every single day here.”
“When you cannot win singles you have to try to win doubles,” joked Casper, who lost his opening singles match to Thiago Monteiro earlier on Wednesday.
“It was not the best beginning of the day but a very nice way to finish the day for me. Winning alongside Rafa was a special doubles today. We saved a match point so a bit lucky, and we look forward to the next match.”
Asked about that team nickname, Rafa approved: “I have Fedal, and now Ruudal… so both!”

Just saw today’s results in Sweden. Both top seeds Ruud and Rublev lost. Rafa is a huge favorite to win the title. I hope to see Rafa with the singles trophy and doubles trophy at the end of the tournament on Sunday! 🏆 🏆

Rafa said that he entered the US Open because he had to in order to allow himself to make the decision nearer the time about his participation. He has no plans confirmed yet for after the Olympics, except the Laver Cup.

I just read a report (Forbes) that Rafa is on the entry list for the US Open. If true this is what I’ve been waiting for. Rafa must be feeling really good to consider playing on hard court. Would he consider other tournaments on the North American swing?
