ATP Finals 2020: Rafael Nadal tops Andrey Rublev in London opener

World No. 2 Rafael Nadal got off to a winning start at the Nitto ATP Finals on Sunday night.

Our champ recorded his second win against the 23-year-old Russain Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4 in their first Group London match that lasted 78 minutes.

He has now won 70 matches in a row after winning the first set, the last time he lost from a set up being a 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6) loss to Nick Kyrgios in the quarterfinals of Acapulco in February 2019.

After the match, Rafa said:

I think it has been a positive start for me. Always, the first match is very tricky. Here, every match is difficult, you play against the best of the best so very happy, sorry for Rublov [sic] but I wish him the very best for the rest of the tournament. He had an amazing season even under these very difficult conditions. We had the season and he was able to win a lot of titles so it’s an important victory for me.

Rafa will enjoy a day off before Group London 2020 hits the court again. On Tuesday he will face Dominic Thiem, who defeated defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets earlier today.

  1. Soooo sad!!! Really wanted Rafa to win all his matches. Don’t really know how this works but hope he wins some more.

    Better luck next match Rafa!

    Love you!!!

    • Rafa couldn’t capitalize on his chances. Looked tentative. Had a chance in 1st set TB, Had a break in the 2nd set. Need to press on.

  2. Should be a good match… Rafa knows what to do… Stay focused while making adjustments along the way…

    VAMOS RAFA!!!!!

  3. Oops! Correction…. Thiem will be pumped more than ever for his match today against Rafa, so I’m really expecting Rafa to bring his A game, with some smart tactics and good serving……

  4. Thiem will be pumped more than ever for this match today against Thiem, so I’m really expecting him to bring his A game with some smart tactics and good serving. No short balls PLEASE! Thiem is hungry for this title, so Rafa has to show him that he’s even hungrier! Get it done champ! 🎾💪🏽🤞🏼💖

  5. I totally agree with all the comments posted. I too was surprised to see where Rafa was standing. Obviously, Thiem will be a far tougher test, but Rafa seems very determined. He wants to prove he can play well indoors too.

  6. Great start by Rafa, really interesting to see new tactic, standing on the baseline as opposed to way behind it. He is always willing to adapt his game and I think that calm Carlos has had a very positive influence at the right time in his career. Toni did do much over the years but a new voice has proven successful .
    All good wishes Rafa 🇪🇸🌟🍿

  7. Strong win over a worthy opponent. Best of luck in next round. Stay safe and healthy-👏👍💪🤛🍀❤️

  8. I Loved that Rafa was taking Rublev’s 2nd serve from inside the baseline .I always thought this would be more effective than returning deep on 2nd serves . Bravo Rafa for an impressive service game and confident win 👊

      • I had to switch channel, just checking scores 😔
Medvedev and Zverev will take care of business 😉

      • Mimi, I’ve got to feel for Diego because he seems to be genuinely surprised he didn’t do better against ND. I had hoped for him to win at least one set.
“I feel that maybe the score is misleading, or maybe not. I didn’t feel like I played such a terrible match for the score to be 6-3, 6-2,” Schwartzman said. “But at the same time, I felt like I was pretty far behind the whole time, except for at the start of the first set. So there are things to improve, there are things I did well and that I tried today. [ATP Tour]

In one interview, he said his goal was to stay within the top ten for at least some time to come. I hope he can.

      • Hi Margo, I thought Diego started the match well. He even broke serve first except gave it back right away 😬 I stopped watching after he lost serve early second set. Hope he plays better against Medvedev and Zverev.

I hope he can too. The best to Diego except when he plays Rafa!

      • Thiem will be pumped more than ever for this match, so I’m really expecting Rafa to bring his A game, with some smart tactics. Thiem is hungry for this title, so Rafa needs to show that he’s even hungrier! Get it done champ! 🎾🤞🏼💪🏽💖
