Rafa Roundup: Rafael Nadal jet skies around Ibiza

“I’m sure you had a great learning experience at the Academy in school. But also away [from the classroom], I hope you learned from Rafa. He is a champion in so many ways. He is very humble,” Federer said. “Always remember to be kind. Remember to be kind to others. You are only as strong as your team and I hope you go on and have a successful and a wonderful career in whatever you are doing, and when you look back at these days in the Academy, [you remember them] as some of the best days of your life.”

“The fact that an entity such as Laureus Sport for Good, which has vast experience and high standing on this area internationally, has committed to collaborate with the Rafa Nadal Foundation is excellent news, for us as an organization as well as for hundreds of children and families who will benefit from it,” explains Maria Francisca Perelló, Director of the Rafa Nadal Foundation.

The new-look ATP Tour calendar intends to resume on Friday 14 August with the Citi Open, the ATP 500 event in Washington, D.C., followed by the Western & Southern Open, the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 event, to be hosted at Flushing Meadows, in the lead up to the US Open (31 August – 13 September).

Following New York, the Mutua Madrid Open and the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, ATP Masters 1000 events on clay in Madrid and Rome, respectively, will take place in September ahead of Roland Garros in Paris (27 September – 11 October), which will also feature a singles qualifying draw the week prior.

  1. ” I have never counted it but in the 2008 Wimbledon final I had to play with my foot askeep from the start of the match…. The stops complcated everything because the anestaesia didn’t last and I needed it because I couldn’t support my foot”. This is what Rafa revealed to Essentially Sports about his match against Roger – a fact which I didn’t know at the time.

As we know, victory didn’t come easy for Rafa and he explained that he had a severe foot injury which meant he had to have an anestaetic before the match. What a warrior! What a champion!

    • Since the bit about Rafa needing his left foot numbed before the Wimbly ’08 final is described in his book (with John Carlin, pub. in 2011) I’m kind of surprised that this is even news. It’s described there as “a blister and a swelling”. (Which is how planar fascitis, a very painful condition, is usually described – most people can’t even walk across a room with it!) The anesthetic was supposed to last for 5 hours and it did in fact last for the duration of the match, but I’m not surprised that Rafa was very concerned what with 5 sets plus rain delays.

  3. The irony of Djokovic. If philanthropy were really the sole goal-donate and set an example by protecting your family, wearing a mask, etc. His father, ever the buffoon, makes me think of children who have wanted to divorce their parents. Neanderthal comments directed to and about Roger are legendary. Pathetic, yet sadly funny. That elusive magic is just not there.

  4. As if Novak didn’t have enough woes, his father has waded in blaming Grigor Dimitrov for the spread if the virus. This comes on the back of him criticizing Roger for not retiring. Doesn’t he realise that he’s doing his son more harm than good in the popularity stakes? I bet Novak wishes he could place a gagging order on him as tennis is getting media attention for all the wrong reasons.

Meanwhile, Rafa and Roger continue to demonstrate that they are great ambassadors of the sport.

  5. Novak is getting slammed by every network in NY showing clips of his partying in clubs…playing basketball and planning the tournament which should never have taken place…. NIck K took a shot at his fellow players on Instagram …saying “This is not a joke!!!” … Patrick McEnroe was interviewed saying ” this has put a tough blow for tennis” … And Andy Murray had a press conference questioning whether officials at a tournament can keep the tournament truly safe ..
“Covid virus doesn’t care who we are and what we do”…

The US Open is 2 months away with very strict protocols in place ( which Novak openly criticized as too strict)… I guess he doesn’t think that now….

Here’s hoping all affected have a speedy recovery….

  6. COVID-19 symptoms-
    Loss of sense of smell
    Loss of sense of taste
    Loss of sense…………..

How else can we explain this mumbo jumbo? Hope it is not contagious.

    • Isabel, Isabel…scientific breakthroughs are always being made😂

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it😬 LOL

I gotta tell you though that you won’t be able to reap the rewards of Djokovic’s “discoveries” if you mask. I gave my masks to my pets just in case things don’t work out for me😷

Tennis is making big news on TV but for all the wrong reasons. I guess reporters haven’t heard of his scientific breakthroughs.

I am surprised Sascha tested negative because he was giving Djokovic mucho hugs.

Glad Rafa is staying home. Sad that Spain has reopened.

And there is no guarantee yet from the FO that players will be 100% safe from this virus🤔
      Maybe I’m asking too much.

  7. “Not content with just being an anti-vaxxer though, Djokovic had to throw more fuel on the fire. Enter the Great and Powerful Oz–otherwise known as Chervin Jafarieh. Djokovic and Mr. Jafarieh engaged in a truly bizarre discussion on Instagram Live later in the lockdown about how thinking positive thoughts can change water molecules and turn polluted water into fresh water and spoiled food into good food. Now THAT is the power of positive thinking. Throw away your refrigerators and water filters! Food safety need not concern you any longer!

If you’re interested in participating in the water molecule revelation, you can purchase some special potions on Chervin’s website that will help you be smarter AND healthier. Just don’t look behind the curtain.

I wish I was making that up.”

The above is part of an article that was posted on the GrandStand by Ricky and he usually defends Djokovic.

Is Djokovic related to trump? They seem to think alike😂

Dimitrov is quoted as having tested positive in Monaco. No date given.

  8. Somehow i don’t think Rafa would have been that stupid. Our champ is the master of caution and wisdom.

    • I agree with you Lorna… Rafa has taken this very seriously and he’s not jeopardizing his health… I would bet even his buddies on the yacht with him were recently tested..

I definitely think this Adria situation will put a damper on future tournaments and the players decision as to which they choose to participate in… if at all..

I hope Rafa stays in Europe, works hard on his fitness, and gets ready for the French…. to bring home Lucky 13 🏆

  9. No Djokovic wife has tested positive now too for Covid19. Praise be to God that our hero kept well away. I can nearly see that tennis is finished til 2021. All these players from Adria tour must isolate then if they get it…..Rafa my hero I think you wont need to defend your points…we will award you 2 GS and 4 Masters

  10. It was only a matter of time before Novak tested positive. He and other affected players are lucky that the US Open and RG are far enough away for them to isolate and recover in time.
That said, who knows how many more associated people have tge virus and what effect will this have on the two remaining grand slams of the year and events leading up to them?
As Andy Murray said diplomatically, lessons must be learned from this.

  11. VAMOS SWEETHEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) GLAD YOU ARE HAVING FUN ON THE WATER WITH YOUR FRIENDS……….YOU LOOK SOLID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) FIT AND STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) VAMOS SWEETHEART AND ENJOY A BEAUTIFUL WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )

  12. Despite good intentions, the Djokovic tournament was foolish. No one is invincible. The only positive outcome is that everyone learns to take this pandemic seriously. Hopefully Novak and all who are affected as a result of this will completely recover. Stay safe and healthy all.

  13. Novak and Jelena tests positive for corona virus….

This is not surprising… I just hope he didn’t spread it to anyone on his trip back from Croatia as he bolted out of there saying he “feels fine.” instead of being tested there and then having to quarantine…
    IMO hiis attitude was wreckless…

  14. Novac has always been rather arrogant and egotistical like praising God when he wins, thumping his chest the big I am.
God would never favour anyone over another, that would be totally unfair
.Tennis is a game of skill but there is a certain amount of good luck involved,he has put potentially many thousands at risk because of his ignorance and arrogance, some possibly will die. I hope he learns from this mistake and to be humble like Rafa.and Roger.
Thank God Rafa had more sense than to attend these match’s. .

  15. Margo,

Exactly right. You and I and many others commenting here trust science and the advice of medical experts.

Sadly some tennis players have chosen not to educate themselves or are willfully ignoring the recommendations. Beyond that they are also showing a lack of common sense and concern for others. Some of their coaches and other team members are older adults who could be more at risk. Really SMH in disbelief.

    • Pauline, unless each country can test and trace, the virus will keep spreading because they won’t know where the virus is so people can quarantine or self isolate. That much is a certainty.

Being a small country New Zealand was lucky. They had no cases until four people were admitted to the country with the virus. Fortunately they were quickly identified.

The US is seeing record highs in some states.

I live in NYC and hope the test and trace method works here but if everyone is not tested I don’t see how it can succeed here. Only now are masks required on public transportation. It should have been mandatory sooner.

  16. Novak should never had that tournament..he did it just because no Covid19 in Serbia or Croatia. He had test done .feel sad for Dimitrov and Coric
Looks as if Grigor brought back from America. If Novak has put the few tournaments scheduled for end Aug Sept.in jeopardy..he won’t be popular. Thank the Lord our Rafa didn’t t go to the Adri event. No audiences allowed now US open is latest news

  17. Obviously Nole doesn’t know a thing about this novel coronavirus, that you can have Covid-19 but be asymptotic.

The following is from The Telegraph [UK]

“Djokovic’s representatives have confirmed that – as of Monday morning – he has yet to undergo a test. On Sunday night, all the other players and support staff reported for testing to the official event hotel in the Croatian city of Zadar. But Djokovic returned to Belgrade.

According to one Croatian report – which was described as accurate by a member of Djokovic’s team – he “decided not to be tested on the spot, because he does not feel any symptoms, nor anyone from his environment, including the professional staff”….

      • Am not expecting N.D. to ever admit to a positive test after the debacle he fronted. He certainly lacks the good judgment needed to continue as head of the player council.

All of the participants made a huge mistake. Remains to be seen if they learn from this. Thiem for one apparently has not. He is entered in another tournament. Should be self quarantining. Testing only indicates illness not exposure. Also false negatives are possible.

Very much hoping that Rafa and his friends are taking every precaution on their shore excursions in Ibiza.

  18. Djokovics fitness coach…Marco Panichi …. Tests positive for the virus!!!

When the tournament was planned Novak said… ” People in the US and UK don’ t understand. Serbia is in good shape”. Really Novak?

    It’s called a pandemic….

    • Dimitrov’s coach Christian Groh also tested positive….
      That makes four…. so far……

      Scary stuff…..

  19. So both Dimitrov and Coric have tested positive for coronavirus. No surprise! Watching the match between them, I noticed how lethargic Dimitrov was looking and, at the end of it, Coric even asked him if he was feeling ok. In the previous article, I commented on how it was irresponsible to hold the Adria tournament without any precautions and that i wouldn’t be surprised if anyone caught the virus. Now it’s panic stations as Djockovic and other went for testing.
Well, the chickens have come home to roost and I’m afraid that cancelling the final in Zadar yesterday was too little too late. Recklessness has its consequences! Who knows what effect this will have on the main tour.

  20. Dimitrov positive test should force all sports to reconsider re-opening schedules. One positive result
can trigger an outbreak. While we miss the competition, do athletes want to take the risk? Some healthy individuals have minor cases, others have not been so fortunate. Enjoy jet skiing, Rafael. Your team must be exploring your options. Good luck and stay healthy.🍀👏💪👍🤛🎾🥰

    • Sad for him and hope he recovers well. Many more young people are catching the virus lately.

MLB have shut down their training camps after a rash of positive tests. One of the European soccer leagues had to shut down after only 3 days back. This rush to get back to normal during a pandemic was bound not to end well.. All of the leagues should rethink their stances and put public health before profits.

      • Pauline, I am posting here because your comment @8:09pm doesn’t have a reply link.

Testing will test for current illness or previous illness. There is no test for exposure and that’s why people who have been exposed are directed to quarantine for 2-3 weeks.

There are two tests available for Covid-19; a diagnostic or viral test, and an antibody test.
A viral test tells you if you have a current infection.

An antibody test tells you if you had a previous infection.
