Rafa:

It will be a tough one. Sascha is playing great, winning a lot of matches in a row. Tomorrow I need to be ready to keep playing my best and that’s what I’m going to try.

Sascha:

I’m definitely not the favourite in this matchup, but I’ll be ready for it and I’ll do everything I can to recover. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

We’ve had some very tough matches. In Indian Wells, I lost with a match point and in Australia we went five sets. Obviously we had some great battles and I’ve always enjoyed playing him. He’s the greatest of all time on clay, but hopefully I can prepare the best I can for tomorrow.

Rafa leads the head-to-head against the German 4-0, and has won all five of the sets they’ve contested on clay, including a three-set victory in a Davis Cup quarter-final between Spain and Germany earlier this year.

Rafa is the best clay-courter of the Open Era with a 407-36 record (.919), and he improved his record in Rome semi-finals to 10-0 with a straight-set win over his most frequent opponent Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

The King of Clay currently holds the record for the most ATP Masters 1000 titles (31, one more than second-place Djokovic) and will be looking for a 32nd against Zverev.

Rafa, who won both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona for the 11th time each this year, needs to win the Masters title to reclaim the world number one spot from Roger Federer.

Good luck & Vamos Rafa!

  1. I can’t believe it.

Time and time again Rafa was outplayed by Zverev. Even as a spectator I could read Zverev’s drop shots most of the time. 🙁 🙁

  2. Another loose game from Rafa.

    30-40

He saves the BP with a sublime touch at the net but again he fails short in another baseline duel, missing a game point.

Too casual at the net and Zverev passes him easily.

    Another BP. Come on, Rafa.

  3. 2nd set stats:
    Winner: Rafa 1FH; Zverev 5FH, 6BH
    UE: Rafa 9; Zverev 6
Net points won: Rafa 5/7; Zverev 7-10(*)
    Serve:
    Rafa 62 54 38
    Zverev 77 71 80

  4. Zverev attacking the net and exploiting Rafa’s conservative return and court position to great success in this set.

MP for the young gun and he takes it right way.

    6-1 2nd set to Zverev.

  5. Rafa playing better but he still can’t put his 1st serve in.

1st game to Rafa in this set.

Hope to see him resolve that BH from Zverev asap.

    5-1

  6. Too good from Zverev and he finally breaks again to lead 4-0!!

Small window for Rafa at 15-30 on Zverev’s serve but AGAIN he shanks a 2nd serve return way long and Zverev doesn’t look back. He holds so easily.
Impressive from the young gun but disappointing from Rafa really.

    5-0

Rafa trying to stay in the set.
