Rafa on playing David Goffin:

After what happened to him at Roland Garros (an ankle injury), it would be really unfair if he was not here. I’m very happy to see him recovered and playing well. Hopefully he won’t play that well on Monday but he’s 100 per cent here and he deserves to be.

David on playing Rafa:

We’ve played some good matches – on clay in Madrid for example was a good match that Rafa won and we’ll try and play another good match here. I’m sure I can play some good tennis against him. I’ll try and play some good rallies, be aggressive and make him run a lot. We’ll see, I have nothing to lose. It will be a good match.

  1. Timely ACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) : ) IT IS ALL OK…….SWEETHEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ):) : ) 🙂 SENDING LOVE YOUR WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) 🙂 🙂 🙂 😉 GO RAFA GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) : ) 🙂 🙂 VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )

  2. Can rafa come back after being broken twice in the final set? And with a bad knee. Stranger things have happened and im sure he will try!!

  3. Rafa definitely felt the pain when sliding into his FH chasing yet another aggressive ball hit to the corner from Goffin at deuce, followed by a misjudged volley and broke himself.

I hope he will withdraw after this match. It’s been too much already. Too risky. 🙁

    • Rafa pretty much broke himself again (no disrespect to Goffin) but a loose service game and Rafa took one break back with great point construction.

There isn’t much weight in his shots now. Goffin is redirecting them all at will, punishing his legs even more.

This is just too painful to watch.

  4. Great work Rafa , a real treat and privilege for Londoners and GB to have you here this week . Keeping my fingers crossed that your knee holds up and you can take this match.

  5. Rafa was too fed up with those serves out wide on the duece of Goffin side he finally punishes it with a blasting ROS winner.

    But Goffin still hold comfortably.

    1 all

  6. Rafa took the 2nd set winning 1pt less than Goffin and saving all 4MPs, 3 in one game. Such a heart of a lion. Watching him play extra aggressive and go for broke on those MPs was emotional.

Now he has the ad of serving first in the decider. Come on Rafa, get it done neatly this time and take a well deserved rest.

  7. YES – U ROCK RAFA!! 🎾💪🏼😃 Awesome comeback. Keep it going champ 🍀😘👏🏻
    VAMOOS!! 😍🎾👊🏻

  8. One thing’s for sure and that’s Rafa always delivers on entertainment and excitement. He’s so determined not to let everyone down, even though he’s visibly struggling with the knee. Such a fighter! You can’t help but love the guy!

  9. Yes yes yes. Can rafa’s knee take a 3rd set? Im sure he will do his best. Just love this man – win or lose.

  10. GO RAFA GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) : ) : ) : ) 🙂 🙂 VAMOS SWEETHEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) ; ) : ) LOTS OF LOVE & HAPPINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) XOXOXOXOXO

    • Well we’ve been there dozens of times with Rafael. He can pull stunts like this! It’s not a given that he will now take this match and even if he does, maybe pulling out of the Wtf would be the wiser decision long term. We want that Aussie Open much more, don’t we?

  11. Lol. Rafael Nadal – the magician. What a time to break back when goffin serving for the match? Cmon rafa you are a fighter

  12. Maybe you are right Rainier! Like I said, haven’t seen him like this in a long while!!! So so so sad! Wish he hadn’t played here. Sorry!

    Crucial game!

    • Hi jas. The numbers don’t lie. Goffin is still outplaying him in every category and sooner or later Rafa will wilt and Goffin will break I’m afraid. No promising signs from Rafa. The only reason the 1st set went to the TB is Goffin losing some nerves. But he took them back, bravely. If this set goes to another TB Rafa might take it, but I think the 3rd set will only be more punishing to him. Either way, he’s losing it.

  13. Sorry everyone, sorry Rafa. I have to call it now. I don’t think Rafa should have played this event. He’s either stubborn or too hurt to play “differently”, as in coming in swinging and taking the match on his racquet, winning or losing. Still playing that nervy, tentative tennis with painful predictability which won’t lead him far enough I’m afraid. But most of all those knees are still having to bend and scramble too much around the court, which is painful to watch. At this rate he won’t get past Dimitrov for sure and even Thiem will punish him I’m afraid. Will be do sad if he can’t get out of the RR or at worst, can’t win a RR match.

Sorry for the loom but I can’t see it in any other way right now.

Come one, Rafa. Start swinging. Play like you have nothing to lose of prove anymore.

  14. Rafa needs to get this 2nd set if he has any chance of getting to the semis, because it may well make the difference if players are tied for match wins.

    • I agree. Rafa is just reacting! He doesn’t appear to be enjoying the battle at all, while Goffin is just growing in confidence and belief.

  15. Haven’t seen him play like this in a while. Wonder what’s wrong or just not his day. Didn’t watch the shanghai final so …..

Cmon Rafa! buck up!!! You can’t lose like this! Pleeeeeease!

  16. Goffin took the set as expected. Rafa can’t expect to win anything with that reactionary tennis. Granted he’s not 100% but he simply played too tentative while Goffin played brave and sticked to his game plan consistently, despite the nerves and those DFs. Kudos to him.

Now it’s either Rafa changing something and trying to calm down or Goffin will win this match in straight, which will only be deserving.
