Rafa on facing Leo Mayer:

He’s playing well and coming in with confidence. He won in Hamburg a few weeks ago and he’s won two good matches here  Gasquet and Sugita. Sugita was coming here playing well… I need to play better than what I have done, if I want to have chances of success.

Mayer is 0-3 against Rafa, losing most recently in the third round of his 2014 title run at Roland Garros.

GOOD LUCK & VAMOS RAFA!

  1. Nadal is again suffering from first set syndrome. Mayer had no business winning the set.But happy that nadal overcame another sloppy start. Phew! Your making all of us sweat Rafa.

  2. Oh Rafa. You are the greatest tennis champion and yet it seems you need a break of serve every time before you start believing in yourself again and get a hold of those nerves. I’m with you all the way! I’m your greatest fan from the Philippines. 🙂 I named my only child after you.

  3. Bloody hell – at last rafa breaks. Thought it was never destined to happen. Maybe now he can start playing like himself!!

  4. finally after 14 chances he breaks leonardo mayer a lucky loser the champ should be ashamed of himself embarassing

  5. the match reminds me of the muller match at wimbeldon many breakpoints no break for nadal.

His returns are just aweful absoluty aweful courtposition. Obviously carlos moya is unable to convince nadal to do otherwise. If nadal loses second set the match is over 9 breakpoints and you can not convert 1 of them unbelievable

    • mjus you are absolutely right about Rafa’s court position. Like you, I have been highlighting this negative aspect of Rafa’s game too. In the initial part of the match today Rafa was standing close to the baseline especially on the second serve returns, I was brimming with happiness that finally he heard our cries. But then he immediately retreated to his usual hopeless court position and paid the price of losing the 1st set. There were few positives though, like those power angled shots were amazing. I just hope he moves closer to the base line with every match.

  6. Yes, please get a grip on your nerves.
Actually Rafa has been displaying such obvious signs of mental problems for a loooong time now – years – and still ….. is his team trying to address this problem – I mean separately as a major issue. Keeping on and on practicing playing is not enough. I just hope he can turn it around!!!

    VAMOS pleeeeease

  7. Rafa should turn this around. Mayer didn’t do anything special, Rafa simply let the break points go to waste.

Now wake up champ?? Wake up! Mayer is only increasing in confidence now.

  8. Oh no. C’mon rafa get it together – please. I think we’ll just have to settle in for the long haul now the 1st set has gone

  9. What the heck is going on with Rafa and the first sets in this tournament. I’m just praying that this game now goes the same way as the last two .

  10. Anyone sat there anxiously waiting for Rafa to play might like to read an article in the daily mail online – Neuroscientists decode Rafael Nadal’s superhuman reflexes. It’s a long article but certainly worth a look.
