Rafa Roundup: Is Rafa still troubled by stomach pain?

There were good moments and not so good moments, but overall the work of defending champion Rafael Nadal was stellar throughout his 7-6(3), 6-2 takedown of Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi on Friday in Buenos Aires.

In the second set, Nadal turned on the pressure and, after breaking the Italian in the third game, took the set and match, in broiling conditions where the mercury topped 40 degrees Celsius.

“The conditions were extreme and cost me a bit today. My stomach is in a little bit of pain,” said Nadal after the match, while thanking the Argentinean crowd for their support.

The Spaniard is, of course, a complete player on all court surfaces, having won major titles on each one. But there is a certain red, sock-staining, shoe-filling substance of which he is the master. Ever since he won his first title on clay at the Orange Prokom Open in the Polish city of Sopot in 2004, when he was a sleeveless top-wearing 18-year-old, he has absolutely dominated the surface.

This is an ideal time for Nadal to make a move, to break the pattern. His problem, aside from being snakebit, is easily summed up in two words intimately bound together with invisible string: forehand and confidence.

Peter Bodo: Nadal. His problems are much deeper. Just one thing has stood between Federer and perhaps three or four more Grand Slam titles for a couple of years now. That’s Novak Djokovic, and he’s not going anywhere. That’s just life. Nadal, now that’s another story. It’s always sad to see a guy losing his mojo for no apparent reason, and that’s exactly what’s happened to the “King of Clay.” He, too, has a Djokovic problem (everyone has a Djokovic problem), but he also has a Fabio Fognini problem and a Fernando Verdasco problem. All kinds of problems.

  1. It breaks my heart seeing Rafa struggle and get beaten by nobodies. He used to be unbeatable on clay. He practices very hard to no avail. These losses kill his soul. working hard is not the solution.when is he going to understand that?

    • correct he needs new coaching like dokavick and federer got dockavick never attacked the net before becker he has great ground strokes and needs to come in more he has a great net game uncle toni and his father should realize this

  2. Its really dfficult to accept this defeat!!!. Theim clinched the victory attacking the veryp deep base lined Rafa defence!! Not a gret performance by Rafa.. A lot of unforced errors adds up to the misery. Another defeat but Rafa could come back again wd a lot to proove this year. Congrats to Dominic theim!

  3. VAMOS DEAR RAFA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) : ) You had everything going for you and it is was a good match……never mind the score…. there will always be other openings for you dear Rafa !!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) You had many fantastic bright moments in this match !!!!!!!! : ) Please be sure to view this match & see that you had a fabulous game….and there are many great things you did fantastically….. I think the lines calls were not correct many times, and the warning you got was absurd given by another nobody umpire that wishes to be noticed & lacking in tact. Your time was not any difference than what the 2 of you took all match long….and suddenly out of the blue this nobody umpire wanted to feel important but in the long run, folks like him do not go far in life because they lack something much more imp;important and that is common sense discretion . Given the situation, he had poor judgment , and his warning was ridiculous given the heat and the timing of the match. Also he did not over rule many incorrect line calls. When he came down to so call examine the line, he called an out when it was clearly an in IN good ball on the left hand side near the corner…..that was in the beginning of the match. When T served in the 5:4 2nd set, he got away with a couple of miscalls saying your good returns were out….. and also some of his out serves were called IN. Same in the 3rd set….. BUT in the end of the day none of this is really that important sweetheart! None of that makes no difference sweetheart, you played beautifully and with positive energy despite the hot temp. For sure you can take a lot of great solid positives from this game and know that you are ready & competitive for the next match !!!!!!! : ) VAMOS DEAR RAFA & have a nice break between your tours!!!!!!!! God bless you and I am sorry it did not go your way but hey…..it is done and you always try your best & that is enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) : ) Over all your game is in the rise and you are a fantastic determined classy player!!!!!!!!!!! : ) Daveed got away with many miscalls on his favor and that was so obvious that Publo CUEVAS played MUCH BETTER & STRONGER THAN Daveed, but with so many miscalls, IN CRUCIAL TIME of the match, Publo ended up loosing, BUT both Publo and Daveed know Cuevas played the better game!!!!!! : ) I think umpires and line folks get away with way too much inaccuracy in the last year.
    Vamos sweetheart & have a great time with your team !!!!! : ) God bless you & lots of love & happiness!!!!!!!!! : ) : ) : ) 🙂

  4. He just lost to Thiem! OMG>what a pitty! What the hell is happening to Rafa! Training hard is not sufficient anymore! When is Rafa going to win again!!!!!! Can we still have hope and can we believe?????piss off!

  5. well. He lost. I hope this loss is a waking call for Rafa. Is there anyone out there who still believes that Uncle Toni is the best coach for Rafa?. Uncle Toni, Rafa NEEDS ANOTHER COACH, ANOTHER VOICE, a DIFFERENT VOICE. You are letting Rafa waste his career out of family loyalty. Rafa has good years left – get out of his way!! Rafa has no confidence left. There are too many questions remaining. Rafa get a NEW or ADDITIONAL coach!!!!
