Nadal suffered a shock exit to Rosol at Wimbledon in 2012 and another upset looked on the cards until the Spaniard battled back to earn a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) victory in over two hours and 15 minutes on court.

“I thought I was out of here,” Nadal said after the game. “It was the first match on indoor hardcourt for me in almost a year. I’ve lost matches that I was winning. But the last few weeks have helped for building the confidence.”

After the type of slow start that has become all too common in Rafael Nadal’s game in Basel on Monday, Lukas Rosol was close to completing a massive first round upset over the Spaniard. Then he blinked, botching a crucial volley that would have given him two match points, and things quickly unraveled from there.

“It was tough for me to get into the match,” Nadal asserted. “It was a little bit of everything. A little bit of luck, a little bit of belief, to keep fighting for this match. That’s what I did.”

A few months ago, Nadal may not have withstood some great passages of play by the big-hitting Rosol, but as said ahead of this meeting: “Mentally I’m feeling great, with the motivation to keep going.”

That sentiment was again clear afterwards: “Tough match emotionally, but at the same time a great victory. It is important for me have these kinds of comeback. I was in this situation more than I would like this year, but the opposite—winning and finally I losing the match—so I’m happy to win like this, happy in Beijing and Shanghai to win a couple of matches fighting until the death.”

“I’ve improved most mentally this season,” said Nadal. “I have the motivation to keep going and what motivates me is to find a way to play at the highest level possible and to put myself in a position to fight for the things I want to fight for. My goal is to enjoy tennis and compete in all the tournaments and be happy with what I am doing.”

Incoming WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon held a 30-minute press conference with reporters on Monday at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

We ask these tennis players to play in a regular week, five to six nights a week for the ones that play deep. They’re playing a two to three-hour match every time of pretty high level tennis. There are no breaks other than the 90 second changeover.

They don’t have a teammate that can take the ball for a few minutes. You have an NBA player that plays an average of 36 minutes a night. The starters do. And they have a difficult time playing back-to-back. We’re asking them to play two and three weeks in a row, playing five nights a week, three hours a day. So that’s going to beat up your body pretty good.

    • His sole loss came at the Wimbledon event 3 years ago. He has won every match against Rosol since that incident. Vamos Rafa!

    • You’re very incorrect, Arline.

Nadal has only lost once to Rosol and that was in Wimby 2012.
With yesterday’s result, Nadal now leads the Head to Head by 3 – 1.

  4. So he takes too long . I can remember a certain Mr McEnroe going Barmey smashing rackets , chairs shouting SWEARING at everybody calling for the referee ALL TO STALL THE GAME AND PUT OPPONENT OFF AND IT WORKED nobody said anything about that then so GET OVER IT 😉
