Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer gave Spain a 2-0 lead over Denmark in their Davis Cup relegation playoff on Friday.

Both Spaniards beat their rivals in three sets, with Nadal overcoming Mikael Toregaard 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to put Spain ahead while Ferrer defeated Frederik Nielsen 6-1, 7-5, 6-2.

Nadal seemed to be relieved after the opening rubber. “I had a couple of chances in the first set but I couldn’t capitalize on them. In the following I felt more comfortable on the court but it is a quick surface and my opponent served well,” Nadal analysed afterwards. “Every match is difficult, in particular in conditions like those but the most important thing is that we won the first point. I am happy for the victory,” the Spaniard explained.

Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco have discussed playing doubles for Spain at the Rio Olympics and will do so if all goes well over the next 10 months, Verdasco said, according to Marca.
