Rafa Roundup: January 8, 2014

ARTICLES:

… As expected, No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams have been made the top seeds at the Australian Open which begins on Monday at Melbourne Park.

… Rafael Nadal just gained almost 1000 new supporters for his Australian Open tennis campaign. The Kendall Tennis Club took a victory in the Australian Open blitz, and Nadal will now represent the tiny town when he takes to the court later this month. Should Nadal win the final, Kendall will get a big street party in town, thanks to Tennis Australia.

… Carlos Moyá will make his debut as Spain’s Davis Cup captain from 31st January to 2nd February against Germany in Frankfurt, but he’ll do so without ATP World number 1, Rafael Nadal. Following continued knee injuries, Rafa now carefully weighs up every step he takes and playing in the tie against the Germans would put both his ATP schedule and physical fitness at risk.

… Many had doubted Nadal’s ability to still contend on hard courts after a long drought without a title on that surface from2 010 to 2 013.  When he won three Masters 1 000 hard-court tournaments and the US Open last year, he silenced the skeptics for good.  Slower and higher-bouncing than the US Open, this court should suit Nadal’s game even better.
