Rafael Nadal experienced the first earthquake of his life in the morning

UPDATED: Rafael Nadal received a walkover to the fourth round in Indian Wells as Leonardo Mayer withdrew before their scheduled match. He will play Ernests Gulbis next on Wednesday.

Mayer withdrew from the third-round match with a back injury. Rafa was taping his fingers before the match when he heard the news.

“I talked with him,” Nadal told reporters. “It seemed like it’s nothing very, very bad. Just typical, you know, back problem just beginning when he was warming up his serve.”
The walkover capped off a unpredictable morning for Nadal, who also experienced the first earthquake of his life in the morning when a 4.7 magnitude tremblor hit the Coachella Valley. Nadal was on a massage table at the time.

“I was very scared. First time in my life,” Nadal said. “I finish the earthquake, and I was my legs were like this,” trembling his legs.

In the second match on, two-time champion and No. 5 seed Rafael Nadal brings a 2-0 record against Argentinian Leonardo Mayer. In their first match Nadal never faced a break point and in the second meeting in the quarter-finals in Acapulco, he saved both break points he faced.

Rafa has reached the semi-finals or better the past seven years in Indian Wells and owns a 36-6 career record. The only time he failed to reach the semifinals was in his tournament debut in 2004 (l. to Calleri), he did not play here in 2005.
