In my book, he is the greatest competitor in the history of the game, better and even tougher than other standouts like Pancho Gonzales and Jimmy Connors, a singularly rugged individual. I have said it before, but it bears repeating: Nadal’s mind is the single biggest weapon in the sport. That is why he will rediscover his winning ways over time, even if it takes longer than he would like, regardless of how much pain he must endure. It is entirely possible that he might not be ready to win Roland Garros this year, but that is not necessarily so. It will depend largely on Nadal’s capacity to win some crucial matches in both Madrid and Rome. His confidence is exceedingly low at the moment, but some good wins in the last two pre-French Open events could sharply alter the state of his mind.

Q. Is it unrealistic to expect to see Rafa Nadal as a coach? Rafa: I don’t think so. For the moment it is not what I have planned… I know I will be involved in the world of sport, but not in that way. … Q. Which Nadal is the best? Rafa: The one that feels comfortable competing, whether he wins or loses. But at least playing as well as he knows he is able, not just as well as he can.

Rafael Nadal lost again on clay, this time in Barcelona. He now has three losses on his favorite surface this year, equaling his total for last year that was his highest in a decade. And the struggling Spaniard has three more clay tournaments to play this spring. … Barring injury, Nadal likely will be favored against anyone but Djokovic when he seeks his 10th French Open title. But with an unusually low seed number next to his name and lots of new challengers, Nadal could have much tougher matches than he’s accustomed to.
