Rafael Nadal will play his opening match on day one of the US Open.  Rafa, who has won an ATP World Tour-best nine titles this season, including an eighth Roland Garros crown, en route to a 53-3 overall match record, plays American wild card Ryan Harrison for the second time (Rafa leads 1-0). Harrison is trying to earn his first career Top 10 win (0-19).

The 2010 champion (d. Djokovic) is playing here for the 10th time and has a career tournament record of 34-8. Rafa also reached the final in his last appearance in 2011 (l. to Djokovic). Also SF in 2008 (l. to Murray) and ‘09 (l. to eventual champion del Potro ) and QF in ’06 (l. to Youzhny). His earliest exit in Flushing Meadows was the 2R in first two visits in 2003 (l. to El Aynaoui) and ’04 (l. to Roddick).

Rafa has played Harrison just once prior to this meeting, earlier this year in Indian Wells, where he defeated Harrison in two sets.
