Sports world reacts to Rafael Nadal’s decision to withdraw from Wimbledon

22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon because of a torn abdominal muscle on Thursday, a day before he was supposed to play Nick Kyrgios in the semifinals. The withdrawal ended Rafa’s bid for the Grand Slam following his titles at the Australian Open and Roland Garros earlier this season.

  1. No one should ever question RAFA’s veracity! He is a very principled man in all things!

  2. So sorry you are not playing, but you definitely made the right decision. Your match against Fritz was amazing
You are truly the most humble and genuine person, and I just want you to get better soon.God Bless you.

  3. Feel so very sad – feel like crying! You had such a chance to win all 4 slams this year. But happy that you made this decision. The absolutely right one.

May you recover quickly and completely. Really hope to see you again fit in every way!

    VAMOS CHAMP!!!

  4. Wise decision, the tournament will not be the same without you. I have seen you play for many years, and it’s always a joy. All good wishes for a speedy recovery. You are the best in every respect. A wonderful example.

  5. Even being sad , wise decision! I don’t think Rafa could win playing in this conditions limited of all the tools! OMG it made my day so sad 😭 Speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 I hope Kyrgios will be able to stop Djocovid

  6. My interest in Wimbledon has waned somewhat since the news of Rafa’s withdrawal. He desperately wanted to play in the semis for the crowd as well as himself, but once again his body has denied him a slam opportunity. Luckily the US Open isn’t that far away and Rafa’s injury should heal in time. Apparently, he’ll be able to do some light exercises in a week or so, apart from serving.

Our champ will come back with a vengeance at the US Open, but I do feel that, given Rafa’s age and injury record, he should adjust his future training and practice sessions accordingly. After all, he’s shown before that he doesn’t need the amount of reps that he thinks he does.

Meanwhile good luck to Norrie and Kyrgios – an opportunity of a lifetime for both.

    • Rafa is my best and favorite. I wish him a speedy recovery. To Rafa, I hope you read this. I believe you have nothing to loose and be ashamed of. You have won it all and situations like this you need to let go when it becomes damaging to your health. You should have given a chance to Taylor and retire honorably at the tie break when you are at 9-4. You would have be the most loving and glorious sportsman. Take it easy Nadal, we love you and would always love to see you play fit on the court.

      • You r motivational to young tennis players. You r 38 years & you do not play tennis for title, but your spirit & skill deserves you to win title.Even your dad got upset during match as you did not quit & you continued playing to show others that you did not use unbearable pain as an excuse , on the contrary you won QF.People will remember you more than tennis.Entire world will pray for your speedy recovery & again wanted to see you on tennis court , not for title only. You proved age is just number.God bless you.👌🙏

  7. I feel so sorry for him, but he took the only right decision. Health comes first. Wish you a speedy recovery Rafa and hope to see you in a few weeks back on court. ❤️❤️

  8. Seems to me a change in the whole tennis scheduling should be in the books. Players need
more recoverery time inbetween matches. It is
looking more like a battlefield out there than a
tennis match. A game that lasts 4 hours or more?
Theres bound to be injuries, I could make a long
list of injured players! WTF..it’s not football.
Rafa already won Wimbled in my book.
    Heal Rafa, and be happy!

    • I think he’s selfish. He should have retired whilst playing against Fritz, so the latter would have a chance to play next opponent.

  9. I wish they could reinstate Fritz as a lucky loser … I know it doesn’t work like that, but relatives of mine have got tickets for today and are very disappointed to be seeing only one semi instead of two, Obviously Rafa wasn’t to know that it was a tear and not a strain, but it’s a shame for the fans.

    • Setinthepast, I sympathise with your relatives not being able to watch two semis, but I’m against Fritz being reinstated because he lost. I’m sure that if it was to happen, other quarter final losers would have legitimate cause to complain. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be fair for a losing quarter finalist to win the tournament.

As we know, tennis is an individual sport and injuries can happen at any time, causing the course of events to change. On the positive side, Wimbledon has done a u turn and offered to refund men’s semi final tickets. It’s doesn’t fully compensate for the disappointment, but it’s something.

  10. I ADMIRE NADAL FOR HIS COURAGEOS DECISION AFTER A HEROIC BATTLE WINNIG QF AGAINST INTERESTINGLY SAME OPPONENT TO WHOM HE ONCE AGAIN SUFFERING WITH PAIN BUT PLAYED TILL END SHOWS HIS RESPECT FOR GAME.I HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM TO START PLAY AND RETIRE STAND FOR CORRECTION.HE WITHDREW SEVERAL TIMES FOR INJURY AS HE FELT HE CANNOT DOJUSTICE TO PLAY VIGOURSLY AND COMPETE.MY PRAYERS AND WISHES FOR QUICK RECOVERY AS WE ARE ANXIOUS TO SEE HIM AT US OPEN

  11. Good luck dear Rafa. Wish you a quick recovery and Good luck for the hard court season. I know you can you will win us open 22

  12. As he should. Rafa knows what’s best for his own body. It’s an excellent decision by him to pull out, cause he didn’t wanna do more damage to his body.
Anyway, wishing Rafa a speedy recovery. Hopefully he can be well enough to compete at the US Open later this year.
I will look forward for him getting his 5th US Open and 23rd Grand Slam title.
VAMOS Rafa no 1 always and forever.

  13. Will miss you Rafa. You were playing amazingly and had all the chances to win the Title. Yes, sure your health is most important. So get well soon and be back for more Titles. God Bless. Vamos Rafa!

  14. I just want to cry. 🙁 It just doesn’t seem right. Look to the Lord, Rafa…. I know you believe happiness is most important but sometimes we go through things to lead us to Him. Regardless, get better – we want you back! And we appreciate EVERY MOMENT we still have you on court! Praying for a speedy recovery. And no matter what you ARE THE G.O.A.T.!! VAMOS RAFA!
