PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal claims 89th career title in Melbourne

World No. 6 Rafael Nadal beat Maxime Cressy 7-6(6), 6-3 in the Melbourne Summer Set final on Sunday to clinch his 89th career title and gain a big confidence boost ahead of next week’s Australian Open. The American had a set point in the tiebreak but couldn’t convert and once our champ claimed the first set, the final result was almost inevitable.

The 20-time grand slam champion did not drop a set at this year’s tournament on his way to a first title of 2022. He has now won a title for 19 consecutive years.

I want to thank all the organisation here. I feel privileged and a very lucky guy to be here again. I am coming back from some challenging moments in terms of injuries, so I can’t be happier. It means a lot to be back and with a trophy in my hands.

This court has always been very, very special for me. The Rod Laver Arena is very, very special for everyone and it is more special because of you guys. You guys are a great crowd and I can’t thank you enough.

Only Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94) have won more ATP Tour titles than Rafa’s 89 in the Open Era.

  1. It was a great day for Rafa and all his fans It was nerve racking but worth every minute you will never know just how we love watching you there just isn’t anybody to compare with watching RAFA

  2. While Rafa was winning his 89th title, the Serbian was holed up in a roach infested immigration hotel. His request to have his personal chef prepare his meals was denied. He needn’t worry because scientists have found that bugs contain lots of protein.

The appeal, to be heard remotely, is scheduled for 10:30am local time. A link for it is in the Bleacher Report’s article “Where and When to Watch Novak Djokovic Court Deportation Case Live.”
