Twenty-time Grand Slam singles champion Rafael Nadal will start his 2022 ATP Tour singles campaign against Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis at the Melbourne Summer Set on Thursday. This will be the first meeting between them.

The 31-year old from Lithuania only twice defeated players ranked in the top 10, the last time being in 2016. Last season he reached the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in his career, but still ended the year ranked outside the top 100.
Rafa’s 2021 season was cut short in August to recover from a foot injury. His last match in singles on the Tour was at the Citi Open on Aug. 5 last year.
