Rafael Nadal said on Tuesday that he will take part in the Madrid Open, raising doubts about whether he intends to defend his title at the US Open.
The US Open, whose fate still hangs in the balance, is scheduled to run from August 31 to September 13 on the hard courts of New York while the main draw at the Madrid event on clay starts on September 14.
Madrid will serve as a warmup for the rescheduled French Open, the claycourt Grand Slam that begins on September 20.

I’m still not sure that the US Open’ll even be happening, so the decision might not have to be made. Washington’s just been called off. Fingers crossed for Roland Garros – things don’t seem to be too bad in Paris.

I was worried when Gov. Cuomo enthusiastically announced that the USOpen would be held. I am still worried.
There are no riots going on in Paris unlike the U.S. I’m scared about the lack of law enforcement personnel , more than the virus. There’s wholesale early retirements and applications for disability in the Police departments in many cities.
Yes, there have been riots and demonstrations in France in support of equal rights and condemnation of the murder of George Floyd but on a much smaller scale: France’s population of 67 million vs the US’s of 328 million could be a factor.
