Easy pickings in the first round.

Good luck to them all, but especially our RAFA!

  8. Canadian and world No. 13, Denis Shapovalov, just lost to Hungarian and world No. 67, Marton Fucsovics 3-6, 9-7, 1-6, 6-7.

I sure hope Shapovalov didn’t lose because of the poor air conditions. He was one of many players who voiced concerns about the poor air quality.

    • Margo,
Air quality was good yesterday and the same for both players. Denis may not have fully recovered physically from playing both Davis and ATP Cups. He needs to accept that any top 100 player can beat another on any given day. Being a higher seed doesn’t guarantee the win. Otherwise why play the tournament?

      • Hi RR,

I usually include a player’s rank and country because it’s the way most tennis writers do it. My comment was not to suggest a lower-ranked player could not beat a higher-ranked player. As a Rafa fan I learned that many moons ago🤗

About the conditions being the same for both players I agree but one player may not see it that way. Remember the wind at the FO? [I think it was the FO]

I was simply surprised he lost having forgotten how much he’s been playing.

  10. My fellow Rafans , does anyone knows about any site for Rafa’s fans? We can’t have Aussie open with this site the way it’s operating. Actually it’s not operating at all, on a standstill for so long. Yet we keep on posting here as we don’t have a choice. Wish we can come up with some better option. Really sorry RNF but your site is a disappointment at the moment. When Aussie open has started and we r not gettin any update.😐Anyways vamos rafa💪💪💪

  11. OF NOTE

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, of Spain, has been criticized by leading sports Australian journalist Greg Baum for making certain demands before agreeing to do an interview in a column for the Sydney Morning Herald. Baum says he was offered the chance to interview Nadal one-on-one this week ahead of the Australian Open – but the interview came with strings attached – “The interview would last 10 minutes, 15 max.

The questions to be asked would have to be submitted in advance. And one would have to be about a travel insurance agency that is sponsoring Nadal. The subsequent story would have to carry a tagline at the end noting Nadal’s involvement with the sponsor.

A tagline is not so unusual, and normally is just that, a line. But this one was 50 words. Any wordier and it would be called a section. That’s not all, far from it. The story would have to include a high-res image from the insurance company’s campaign.

That is, its ad, dressed up as editorial. It would also have to include a picture of Nadal at a press conference taken against the backdrop of the company’s “branded media wall”.” While Baum says the points were not posed as demands but as questions, he says it was implied that the interview would be agreed upon only if the demands were adhered to.

Baum said he finally declined the interview and says he wonders if Nadal knows about the demands being made while agreeing to the interview. “Does Nadal know about these machinations in his name? He should. Ingenue that he sometimes seems, he’s too big a figure in tennis to represent himself as merely a pawn in a game.

Does he care? He really should. The guy has earned around $170 million in his career, and you can quadruple that for endorsements, so this sort of chicanery only makes him look greedy. If (insert name of latest sponsor) really matters so much to him, he can buy an ad.

He can buy the bloody paper. Does it matter? Yes, it does. It goes to the heart of editorial independence, and the way some think they can ride roughshod over it. The Australian Open is a big event, Nadal nearly its biggest star.

In both, there is an abiding public interest far outweighing the commercial. That should be terms and conditions enough for an interview. However much the insurance agency might think Nadal belongs to them, he doesn’t. All sports ration out their stars to media now.

At one level, that is only to be expected: demand is enormous. But of the sports I cover, only tennis – the richest sport of all – puts a price on its stars (and make no mistake, Nadal was not being volunteered to us, he was being sold to us – or the highest bidder). Remember, this interview was offered, not sought.”

    • Sunrise (Australian TV) did the interview in the end. Yes they had the insurance company’s backdrop and yes a couple of questions were asked of Rafa about it. He explained that the company is part of Mapfre, who have sponsored him for years. The interview was great. Baum missed out if you ask me.

      • I wouldn’t call it a great interview.

I feel Baum was right in his refusal to do the interview he was offered. No journalist should be told how to conduct his interview nor should an interview be granted on the condition of the subject promoting some company. I believe in editorial independence. Not infomercials.

  12. Whoever Rafa faces in the finals he will have had one less day of rest. I hope he is in condition to win his matches quickly and in SS leaving him with high energy.

    RAFA ROCKS

  13. What is wrong with this site? Is it abandonated? Does anybody knows what happened with the owner of this aite? Iit was the best site for rafa fans. Until then like always vamos rafa.

  14. The two things I gleaned from Rafa’s 60 Minutes interview were that he didn’t know how long the Nadals have been on Mallorca and that he and María are building their new home.

    • It seems our dear Margo is the same person as Mystified.

Hmmn………but as always, we go day by day and match by match

  15. Maybe the website operators are taking a break or a holiday. I know that happened the last time there was a long pause in its operation. Hopefully, this is the case. Please would someone let us know what’s actually happened.

  16. Has anyone else tried to find out what is going on with this blog? If it has been abandoned? If anyone is running it? If ownership has been transferred?

    • I went to FB and there’s a Rafael Nadal Fan Club but not much happening. There are also plenty of Rafa clubs on FB claiming to be “official”. I visited a few but not much going on.

    • Defunct since when, last post on January 11?

It’ll be a shame. This is a wonderful resource for us all and I have wondered who pays for it. Secretly Rafa? Thanks champ! Seriously though, show yourself, webmaster (web mistress?) if there’s to be a discussion on how we can help maintain this site.

Well done RNF for all the good times. Hopefully more good times ahead!

      • Mac, I’m guessing it’s defunct. I, along with others, have sent emails and no response. So many features of the site have been removed. The draw has been out and no input from RNF.

I would think that the advertising here would pay for the site’s upkeep.

In its current form I don’t think this site is discussion friendly. It’s feeling very weird. My personal opinion.
