What Does Rafael Nadal Have To Do To Finish 2019 Ranked No. 1?

The prestigious year-end World No. 1 Emirates ATP Ranking will be decided in London… and it could come down to the last match of the year because only 640 points separate Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Rafa’s London participation remains in question after he withdrew from his Paris semifinal with Denis Shapovalov due to an abdominal injury.

For each Round Robin win players get 200 points, semi-final win brings 400 points, and the win in the finals is worth 500 additional points. Undefeated champion can earn 1500 points (3 RR wins + SF win + F win).

Here are the multiple scenarios for the year-end No.1 ranking – but who has a better chance at finishing the year ranked No. 1, Rafa or Nole?

  • If Rafa decides to not play in London (wins no matches), Nole must reach the final with at least two round-robin wins to pass him.
  • If Rafa wins two round-robin matches, Djokovic must win the title to pass him.

All No.1 scenarios:

So many numbers… but we just want to see healthy Rafa in London!

Rafa is bidding to hold the year-end world No. 1 ranking for the fifth time and make history as the oldest year-end No. 1.

“As I said during the last couple of years, is not my goal to be No. 1. It’s about I need to organize my calendar to play as long as possible,” Rafa said in Paris. “If with my calendar at the end of the season I am number one, super happy. But I will not try to follow or to make extra things to be No. 1. I just going to do my normal schedule. And that’s the way you need to take decisions, and my decision is to try to do the right things to play as long as possible to give me more chances to play more years on the tour than try to be No. 1.”

Good luck & Vamos Rafa!

  3. NOVAK DJOKOVIC WILL DO ALL IT TAKES TO RETAIN THE YEAR END NO 1 RANKING…..ONLY DANIIL MEDVEDEV WILL PROBABLY STOP HIM FROM ACHIEVING IT.

SO, LET’S ALL FOR PRAY AND HOPE THAT DANIIL CAN DO IT FOR RAFA….BUT STILL, I DON’T SEE IT HAPPENING.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC, I REPEAT, WILL RECLAIM THE YEAR END NO 1 RANKING!

    Cheers!!!

  4. Best of luck for Rafa to complete his recovery journey for the year and finish as the year end Number 1 player. The numbers still sway on Rafa’s side to finish the year on top and the pressure will be on the other side of the net to stop him. He has been playing a great season with excellent serving and top level return performance. All will be wishing for a speedy recovery for him so he can play with abandon in London. Vamos Rafa!

  5. Very clearly stated! Thanks! Best of luck, Rafa! Sounds like he has his priorities in order. I’d much rather see Rafa play longer than see his name next to YE#1., much as I’d like that. Rafa’s had a wonderful year despite his injuries.

  6. Rafa is always number one in my heart no matter what! My family and friends say I am an “one player” tennis fan. I think they have their points……

Of course I hope he will be fit and healthy to play London for his chance to end 2019 as number one. I believe Rafa and his team will make the right decision at the right time. All the best always, Rafa❤️

Vamos! You have had an amazing season, I am so proud of you👏

  7. Rafael Nadal has his priorities regardless of others’ opinions. He has stated it clearly here. Being number one is useless unless he stays healthy. Forget the hype-he will do what is best.👏💪👍🤛🎾❤️

  8. Who cares is long he is Heath is ok that’s is the more important.🎾😘❤️🇺🇸
