Rafa on Medvedev:

He’s making steps forward every single week. He’s having an amazing summer, winning Cincinnati and making the final in Montreal and Washington and now the final here.

He’s been playing the best tennis on tour this summer so he will be the toughest opponent in the final. I need to be playing at my best. But in a Grand Slam final you can’t expect an easy opponent.

Medvedev on Rafa:

He’s one of the greatest champions in the history of our sport,” Medvedev said. “He’s just a machine, a beast on the court. The energy he’s showing is just amazing.

To play him in your first Grand Slam final should be, I want to say, a funny thing. It’s not going to be a funny thing, but it’s going to be an amazing thing to live.

Rafa, the 2010, 2013 and 2017 champion in New York, will be playing in his 27rd Slam final and third this year, looking to add the US title to his record 12th French Open.

Good luck & Vamos Rafa!

  1. Rafa has made it to all four Slam semifinals this season since 2008.

He has reached seven consecutive Slam semifinals since his QF loss to Cilic, due to injury, at the AO last year.

Rafa’s seven straight Grand Slam semifinals is the fifth longest streak in the open era behind Roger, Nole, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl, all that at the age of 32 and 33 and almost 15 years after that first success in Paris.

  2. Matteo on his match vs Rafa:

‘I was ready to play for three or four hours, he [Rafa] was ready to play for six.’

‘So now I have to change my fitness training regime and start to practice more for this kind of matches.’

‘Everybody underestimated his serve, his lefty shots. Then with the first shot he was hurting me.’

By “everybody” does Matteo mean his team? As Roger said “No one plays like Rafa.”

  3. I asked her who is going to win today.

Olé, olé. That is the answer I got from a stranger with a tennis racquet in her backpack, on my way back home from walking my pooch.

We both burst out laughing as I joined in and will hum olé olé until Rafa bites his trophy today.

    OLÉ OLÉ RAFA
