Rafa Roundup: Is Rafael Nadal ready to win on grass again?

“I don’t think about my legacy,” said Nadal, now just two Grand Slam titles shy of Roger Federer’s benchmark of 20. “I think about my day to day and to do it as well as possible.

“If there’s a legacy we shall see what people think. I just try to be a person who’s respectful, educated, a decent human being, to have good people around me, to be happier, that is my philosophy.”

“I don’t want to talk about Nick much because I am not playing against Nick. I am playing against [Yuichi] Sugita,” he said. “Every match is tough. If I am able to win my match and if Nick is able to win his match, you will have the time to ask me about the next match.”

“I respect the Wimbledon rules,” Nadal said at his pre-tournament news conference Saturday. “… If I believe that is fair or not, that’s another story. I really personally believe [it] is not. But I really respect the tournament so much. I really respect the history of this event. I really understand that they see the sport from another perspective. They want to do it by their own rules.”

As far as Nadal is concerned, he has won it twice and came very close last year to winning the tournament, because if he had come through against Novak Djokovic in that five-set semi-final you would have fancied him in the final. And then he has just won the French Open, demolishing everybody, and is still seeded three. It just doesn’t make sense.

And then you see Anderson at four and, as much as Kevin has had some good Wimbledon’s, he was beaten in the second round at Queen’s and has hardly played recently because he has been injured. He is not playing like the No 4 in the world on grass, and there is no way he should have been pushed up to that spot.

Asked if he’s happy to see Murray back, Nadal told reporters: ‘It is not about I am happy to see him back. Everybody should be happy to see him back. He is one of the most important players of our sport in the last 10 years. It is good news when we have the top players back. Most important thing, happy for him personally that he’s able to keep playing.’

‘I know how tough it is being injured, when you want to recover and you don’t find the solution so happy to see him on court again and enjoying. I was practicing next to him. He looks very happy practicing. So happy for that.’

More history beckons for the Spaniard at SW19. The two-time champion (2008, 2010) is trying to join Swede Bjorn Borg (1978-80) by completing the Roland Garros – Wimbledon double for the third time. Nadal was only four sets away from the feat last year.

On Rafa: “Best forehand, best mentality, best fighting spirit. One of the toughest on tour — you have to beat two players, not just one, when you play him.”

“What happen-ned in Paris happen-ed in Paris.” Like a stoplight, we now go from red to green. Coming off a dominant, peak form French Open. But since his last Wimbledon title in (gulp) 2010, Nadal’s campaigns have ended with uncommon disappointment, either early exits or heartbreakers, i.e. last year’s potentially historical semifinal loss to Djokovic. His seed drop notwithstanding, Nadal ought to ride in with loads of confidence after Paris. Is he ready to win on grass again? We’ll learn plenty—not least temperamentally—when/if he plays Kyrgios in the second round.

  1. Such an astute comment on NK; what is there to say? Nick shows us everything through his actions and strange oratory. Sad. Rafael’s philosophy has stood him well. His Babolet will speak volumes.

  5. His Humility is the only reason besides his Skills on the court that I love and follow him since last 13 years…. Respect Legend
    Vamosssssss❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  6. Pam Shriver who is picking Rafa to win cites her reasoning as that he will make an all out push knowing that he can no longer win on hard courts. What an idiotic statement. Yes they are tougher on his knees but only two years ago he won the U.S.Open. I’m sure he has the self belief that he will win again on hard courts.

  7. Dear Rafa. I’m hoping you have a successful, enjoyable Wimbledon this year. Praying you are healthy & pain free to be free to play your very best! I’ll be hoping and praying for you. God bless you Rafa. Love you. Marylynn

    • Yes, good practice 😀 .🎾 Today Monday Tsitsipas out Zverev out 😕 1 st round , 2 threats less to Nadal ☺ Shame our French Herbert 😕 Monfils 😕 Bravo Lopez Espana 😀 Fiona in Paris

  8. Rafa..we all believe and are sending our full support to you. BUENA SUERTE Champion ☘☘🇪🇦🇪🇦🎾🎾

  9. The Met Office are giving dry weather, with temperatures around 23/70 degrees, for the whole of next week, so warm but not too hot. So hopefully there won’t be any issues over the roof, and there won’t be any problems with some people’s matches going on over two days.

  10. Well said, one win at a time… Keep up Rafa and show them you can do it, no matter the seedings is beyond the ATP point system..
Good luck to all your game..

  11. This man’s humility leaves me lost for words. There is nothing to do except admire him. Not only a supreme athlete, but a truly good person, too.
