Rafael Nadal seeded third for Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal has been seeded third for Wimbledon, which begins on 1 July, with world No. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic topping the men’s seeds from eight-time victor Roger Federer.

It means Rafa could face either Djokovic or Federer in the semi-finals should they progress.

The ATP’s top 32 men are seeded at Wimbledon, but the order is based on a formula that gives players additional credit for ranking points earned at tournaments played on grass over the preceding two years. That allowed Federer, who won his 10th title at Halle, Germany, last week, to jump ahead of Rafa.

There were other examples of shifts from rankings to seedings. Last year’s runner-up, Kevin Anderson, was seeded No. 4, even though he is ranked only No. 8 this week; 2018 semifinalist John Isner is seeded No. 9, ranked No. 12; 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic is seeded No. 13, ranked No. 18.

  1. I thought there were only a few grass tournaments leading up to Wimby but there are actually seven, tightly spaced or played simultaneously at different locations. And as we all know, not one Masters. Not a lot of grass-court tournaments compared to hard and clay.

Yet, since 2003, only four players on the men’s side have won the Wimby singles; Rafa, Roger, Andy and Nole.

List of Grass Tournaments for 2019 from the ATP calendar:

    June 10
    Stuttgart [250]
    Libéma Open [250]

    June 17
    Halle [500]
    Fever Tree [500]

    June 23
    Antalya [250]

    June 24
    Eastbourne [250]

    July 15
    Newport [250]

I bet when, in the future, the “formula” starts affecting other high ranked players, they will pound on the door to use rankings instead of “formula.”

  2. Rafa will put this seeding farce behind him and be ready for the start of Wimbledon. As he said “……if they think I have to be three I will accept three and fight to win the matches I have to win.” Typical fighting talk and that just shows the mindset of a great champion.

    • Roger gained so much by winning Halle a 250 tournament. He has 1 more title to move on Jimmy Conner’s 109. He is seeded 2, instead of 3, as the ATP standings would allow. Amazing what an easy lack-luster win he had over the Wee Wizard. Lack of trying is usually seen in Kyrios and Tomic matches, Oh, and match-fixing. Well, now we can add Goffin to the list.

  3. VAMOS SWEETHEART AND ENJOY EVERYTHING!!!!:) YOU ARE JUST AS POWERFUL ON GRASS AND YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL IN WHITE!!!!!:) WE LOVE DEAR RAFA AND VERY HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!:)

    • Yes, Debby K, that’s exactly what I said in a previous post. R Garros stuck to the rankings, even though Federer hadn’t played on clay for some years.

Wimbledon is too full of its own importance, thinks it’ s too great to change. As previous people have said, it’s time the ATP stuck up for the players, and told W it should respect the year round achievements of the players. Today’s professional athletes can play on all surfaces, and W should get up to date, and join the real world. They have a typical stuffy ” We know best” attitude, which is just plain arrogant.

  4. If Thiem lands in Anderson’s quarter and he progresses to the SF instead of Anderson, I think Wimbledon will again be a laughing stock for many people, especially those who are against their seeding system.

Poor Thiem, from no.4 to no.5 that means should he progress far, he has 75% chances of meeting the big three in the QF, instead of SF. He has to hope that he lands in Anderson’s quarter.

The funny thing about Wimbledon is that what applies to the ATP players doesn’t apply to the WTA players! Are all WTA players that good on all surfaces that no special seeding rule is necessary?

  5. they should use atp rankings just as the other 3 majors do….it makes it even harder for players recovering from injury to proceed with this formula……….you can do this rafa, just prove them wrong!!
