According to New York Times’ reporter Christopher Clarey, Rafael Nadal has been suffering with stomach problems. He posted on Twitter:
As you already know, Rafa is currently in Madrid and he is supposed to play Felix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday.
Our champ has hoisted the Madrid trophy five times, and since Madrid moved to clay in 2009, he is 36-6 at the Caja Magica.

That is just ridiculous. I know they want to promote Federer playing on clay for the first time since his knee surgery in 2016. But I t’s a no-brainer that Rafa should have the most prominent place in any poster promoting the clay swing. As a Federer fan I would never dream of acting so entitled to demand Roger be placed in the center.
I hope Rafa is feeling much better quickly and will be in good shape to play this match with Félix.

He’s afraid to meet Djokovic in the final.
After playing brilliantly in the Australian Open he suffered a devastating, embarrassing loss to Joker in the final.
Psychologically he still hasn’t recovered, as evidenced by the way he’s been playing since Australia.
He should see a sports psychologist to help him get over the Djokovic trauma.
Oh dear, not more problems. Hope he’s OK.

If the following article by MARCA is true, I am outraged. How in the world could the ATP give Federer better placement in the European promotional poster for the clay-court swing!!!

Several fan requests forced the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to swap Rafael Nadal’s place in their European clay court tour poster with that of Roger Federer.
The Swiss tennis player was placed as the central figure of the picture, with the Spaniard on his right and several promising players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov below them.
That move, however, frustrated fans, who asked for 11-time French Open champion to be positioned as the main star of the tour.
ATP took the criticism into consideration and created a new poster with the image of Nadal above all the rest.
The 32-year-old holds the record of the most matches won in a row on clay with 81, as well as the most titles clinched, with 57, and the best winning percentage, with 92 percent.”
Thanks to all the Rafa fans who protested this lack of respect for the King of Clay. I had no idea about this until just now while searching for Spanish language articles to see how Rafa is doing.
In a different article by Marca, Rafa has reserved his usual court for practice [#13] today at 15:00 local time. Depending on how Rafa feels after practice, he will give his presser to talk about his recuperation in general and the flu-like symptoms that kept him from practicing yesterday.
Also according to Marca other players have come down with the same illness. In a way this is positive news because it’s not Rafa’s anxiety.

Margo… you know as well as I that Rolex Roger is the “darling” of the ATP and where the ATP can promote tennis with Roger front and center they will. I am proud of all the Rafa fans who called out the ATP in protest for a poster that was clearly tilted with Roger Federer’s presence. And I agree with you, the ATP should show a little more RESPECT to the man who’s the magnet that packs in the crowds at all the clay court events as the spectators want to be wowed in Rafa’s presence and hopefully watch Rafa display another thrilling victory. Madrid could easily offer that wow factor. They are all there! It’s been a long time since we have seen a draw like this with those present like Rafa, Roger, Novak, Delpo, Zverev, Thiem etc etc (except for Kei Nishakori who dropped out because of injury) Hopefully these tennis greats will all feel well and strong and go out there and play their best tennis especially our boy Rafa who needs to stay focused and dig deep within to take out each and every opponent that stands in his way. His climb in Madrid begins soon…. VAMOS RAFA!!!!
Marileena, yes, I have read comments here about Roger being given preferential treatment but I myself have had not noticed it. When people make comments here I don’t automatically take them as fact. Comments were always about the time of day Rafa had to play or the court he was assigned to. Those can easily be explained away as scheduling problems or some other valid excuse. Not really blatant preferential treatment toward Roger on its face.
What I actually lived through was Rafa’s match vs Djokovic at Wimbledon. I felt the roof should have been left open when they came back to finish the match. The roof closure was outrageous.
As for the promotional poster, yes I was taken aback. BLATANT disrespect.
