PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal beats Maximilian Marterer, advances to 2018 French Open quarters

Just one day after his 32nd birthday, Rafael Nadal continued to dominate at the French Open, posting a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Maximilian Marterer in two and a half hours on Monday afternoon. Our champ has recorded the 900th singles match win of his career.

Rafa will now play Diego Schwartzman for a place in the semifinals. The Argentinian player came from two sets down to beat world No. 6 Kevin Anderson 1-6, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(7), 6-2. Anderson twice served for the match, at 5-4 in the third and fourth sets.

Today’s win put our champ into his 12th Roland Garros quarterfinals, tying him with Novak Djokovic at the top of the list for most French Open quarterfinals appearances in the Open Era.

  1. Hmm………. schawartzman! I was praying for Anderson to reach quarter final. Anyway hope he doesn’t tire Rafa a lot. Congrats for reaching quarters and good luck for the next match. Only three more to go. You can do it💪💪💪

  2. Congratulations Rafa for getting into the quarter finals.

All the best for next game,

  3. Rafa congratulations in your win vamossssssssssssssss champ to the finals .fantastic mutch love your fans 🎾🎾🎾👍👍👍❤️🏆

  4. No highlights, no info on game stats (serve percentage etc)? All way more relevant than the 900th win stat. If he beats Schwartzman it is either high tower DelPo, a dangerous in form opponent, or Cilic, who I consider almost as dangerous, especially against Rafa, and a very annoying type of player who has this sad tendency to play worse in finals against Roger. Something that cannot be said of DelPo.

  5. Good match to Rafa. Happy to see you in another quarter-final.

Good luck against Diego who has been practicing at the RN Academy with Rafa and has improved. I hope they have a great competitive quarter-final.

    RAFA ROCKS FOR SURE

  6. H2H says Rafa 5 Schwart.. 0 but he has always exhausted Rafa. The way he overturned the match around against Andersen shows how dangerous he is as he has nothing to loose and he will fight like mad against Rafa, as he always does. I hope Rafa will be supervigilant against him.

Wamos Rafa you are the best.

  7. First time I have seen Rafa get TWO time violation warnings, and it worked.

I have been a Rafa fan since I saw him play at 16 or 17 yrs old in Monte Carlo, but it has to be said that he should have been checked years ago, when he first started taking so long between points. Now it seems to be a terrible habit he’s got into, and much harder to break.

Just hope he will have it under control by the time the US Open comes round, with the shot clock.

    • Time violations are ridiculous server should be able to play at his own pace since many matches take four hours or more what does a few seconds mean

    • I think I saw it once before. I want to say in the Rio Olympics. Does anyone else remember that? Congrats to Rafa on his 900th win! What an incredible record.

    • With the shot clock in place, any time violations will be clear for everyone to see. I don’t think it will be a problem for Rafa, as he will adjust his idiosyncrasies so that he serves within the allotted time. The same goes for Novak with his ball bouncing.

    VAMOS CHAMP! 🎾💪🏼😘

  13. Well done Rafa! Marterer put up a very good challenge but your victory was never in doubt.

  14. Fantastic match and another straight sets win for Rafa. However he was pushed at times and I have to say I was impressed by the 22 year old Maximilian Marterer. He just played the match with none of the dramatics we’ve got used to recently. One to watch for the futre hopefully but more importantly, Rafa is in the quarter finals – again.
