(AP) – Heavy rain brought an early end to play on the second day of Roland Garros on Monday, forcing defending champion Rafael Nadal to return tomorrow.
When the covers were drawn just before 8 PM local time, Rafa was 6-4, 6-3, 0-3 up on Italian lucky loser Simone Bolelli as he started his bid for an 11th French Open title.
The pair will continue as the second match on Court Philippe Chatrier on Tuesday. The winner will play Argentine Guido Pella or Estoril champion Joao Sousa. Pella leads the Portuguese by two sets in a match that was also suspended.

That low first serve percentage is reason for concern. It is what made Rafa vulnerable in the Rome final and it will make him vulnerable at RG. He was broken in each set today…

Although it’s difficult to have to finish the match the next day, I’m glad they stopped as I was worried about Rafa slipping.
The resumed match will be second on Court Philippe Chatrier tomorrow, following Cilic’s match. I hope the weather is better, although forecasts for the rest of this week are not too promising.

I don’t think it is fair to blame the organizers for Rafa’s schedule today. NBC is paying a lot for the RG rights and they wanted Rafa’s match during their broadcast window which started at o12 noon EDT. Rafa is still so nervous which was coupled with damp weather. Rafa served only 55% too. Bolelli came out with a plan to blast everything, which was the same strategy used successfully by Thiem. Bolelli’s challenge was to be able to keep it up for best of five. I fully expect Rafa to come out tomorrow with guns blazing. He will have been disappointed at his level today, but he is still up two sets.

NO ONE knows what Rafa may have agreed to regarding court he would play on. OR, if he had things to take care of earlier in the day [sponsors?] OR, as Va4favre suggested, broadcasting rights may have dictated when and/or where Rafa would play which is a sensible explanation from a sensible fan.
