Mexican Open Draw 2018: Rafael Nadal Going For Third Acapulco Title

The draw for the Mexican Open has been released and Rafael Nadal will face fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the opening round.

The world No. 2 should get through that, and set up a second round meeting with either Thanasi Kokkinakis or qualifier.

Rafa could face last year’s champion Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals.

Rafa’s potential route to the final:

  • 1st round: Feliciano Lopez
  • 2nd round: Thanasi Kokkinakis
  • Quarter-final: Sam Querrey
  • Semi-final: Jack Sock or Kevin Anderson
  • Final: Alexander Zverev

Projected quarterfinals:

  • Rafael Nadal vs Sam Querrey
  • Jack Sock vs Kevin Anderson
  • Juan Martin del Potro vs Dominic Thiem
  • John Isner vs Alexander Zverev

The 500-level tournament is played on outdoor hard courts.

Rafa is 14-1 in Acapulco, winning the title twice: first, when it was held on clay in 2005 and then again in 2013. Last year, our champ didn’t drop a set en route to the final, but he was edged by Querrey in the final, 6-3 7-6 (3).

  2. Want Rafa to win Miami, which is missing in his collection. Not concerned about the other tourneys. Wishing him to be competitive and injury free. Want him to win tourneys he has never done before. Pls listen to moya, play attacking 🎾 and win everything…the force will be always WID u..

  3. I think Lopez is a tough 1st round competitor. He has a big serve and is one Spanish player who does better on hard court than he does on clay.
Rafa always seems to get tough draws . He very rarely gets a qualifier in the first round so the pressure is there right from the start.
I agree with mjus that Rafa must change his court position and improve his returning skills but a change of court position should give him a better chance in returning serve.
I hope Moya can persuade him of this especially against big server Lopez.
Rafa will always be my hero but , oh dear, my heart is in my mouth when I see him standing way back from the baseline to return serve.
    PLease, Rafa, listen to Moya.

  4. Match for Match tough draw for rafa. Feliciano Lopez is a problem due to his serve and volley game and also has a good serve on hardcourt. I predict Querry is a problem because of his powergame strong serve, and groundstrokes. Anderson is going to be a problem on hardcourt.

Nadal can win this tournament if he improves his courtposition and returning skills
