Rafael Nadal pulls out of Paris Masters quarter-final with knee injury
(AFP) – World number one Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Paris Masters on Friday before his quarter-final with a knee injury.
Rafa who had his right knee strapped during his third-round win on Thursday, said he wanted to try and be ready to face Filip Krajinovic in the last eight but that “it wasn’t possible to play”.
He did not say if he would be fit to play at the World Tour Finals in London later this month.
Yesterday (Thursday), the pain was very strong but it was not the moment to stop.
I had treatment last night to try and be able to play today… But unfortunately it was impossible for me to return to the court in the same condition as last night. It is a sad day for me.
I had a long year, a lot of matches. I pushed the body. We are at the end of the season. It’s normal that these kind of things happen. The knee is always, you know, bothering a little bit, but sometimes it’s worse, and now is a little bit worse.”
I’m going to do my treatment, do my best to be playing in London, but I cannot talk about that now because (it) is a day that is tough enough for me to pull out from here.
For me it’s not about London. For me it’s about longer term. And longer term I’m going to do the treatment I believe that (is) going to be more safe and more important to keep playing tennis as long as possible.

I was really surprised to see that Rafael was playing in the Paris 1000. I didn’t check his schedule just assumed he would pass on it, practice a bit & show up in London for the year end
Tourney.
I wish RAFAEL had skipped Paris
& Just focused on the Yr End
Tourney☹️ I know he hadn’t won either
But I would have preferred he had Chosen play against the Final 7 in stead!!!

Very wise, Rafa! Your body is your everything. I’m glad you listen to it. The longer term is more relevant and not a last Paris or London.
Ceep cole and we will seeying you soon enough when you are ready <3
you have done the correct thing rafa .just take the time to get well. we dont want to lose yu again for a long period, you have already proved you are the best.so relax get your knee back to normal .and have a speedy recovery .
I know it’s pointless writing this now and you’ve heard it a million times before but supporting Rafa can be so painful sometimes not because of winning or losing but because of his decision to push the body so much when he has never played 2 years straight without injury. At 31, you would think he would see that. It’s always at the last moment where he is incapable of playing at any % that he does the right thing. I wanted him to skip Laver cup, I wanted him to skip Shanghai. I want to see him play for MANY years. Not see these retirements anymore from tournaments which could affect his future too if he doesn’t take care of his health a bit better. Disappointed to say the least as I hoped Moya would’ve talked him out of this schedule. I know Rafa is a competitor, one of the best we’ve seen. But sweet Rafa sometimes you need to skip events so you can compete for a much longer time and compete better too.
Nonetheless. Glad he withdrew. Hope him a great recovery and I HOPE, he doesn’t play WTF IF HE ISN’T 100%.
Yeah the warnings were given, the schedule was way too ambitious and the result is now that come Aussie Open expectations will be low again, because of a long layoff. Who advises this man?
