PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal defeats Kevin Anderson to win US Open

World number one Rafael Nadal has beaten Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to win the 2017 US Open. It’s Rafa’s 3rd title in the event and his 16th major tournament triumph overall, which is astonishing.

Throughout the game, Rafa had seven aces and 23 unforced errors. He definitely showed he was the No. 1 ranked men’s tennis player in the world. He broke Anderson’s serve twice in the first set, the 7th and 9th games to win it 6-3. He continued in the same style in the next two sets – unstoppable. Our champ lost just 15 points on serve in the entire match, did not face a break point and won all 16 points he finished at the net. Wow!

It is a very special two weeks for me, but first I want to say congratulations to Kevin who has come back better than ever after some tough injuries. You are a great example to all the players on tour.

It’s just unbelievable what happened this year. After a couple of years with some troubles, injuries, sometimes playing not good – since the beginning of the season it has been very, very emotional. To close the Grand Slam year with a win in New York, brings me to a higher energy because the crowd is unbelievable here.

On Uncle Toni: I can’t thank him enough for all the things he did for me. Probably without him I would never be playing tennis and it’s great I had somebody like him pushing me all the time.

  1. love, love, love you – you are truly the best and cried tears of joy for you my dearest Rafa when you won – love you – your 70 year old fan forever.

  2. An almost complete new experience for Nadal and his fans in the months ahead, especially compared to the last three seasons. We can sit back and relax for once during October and November and see how this part of the season spins out for Rafael. Even if Nadal does not win anything anymore, the season has been a huge success. Surely, we don’t want him to lose another time (or more) to Roger. But in the end, tennis is about winning majors. Rafa won 2, and that is what counts most. An in form Nadal, by the way, will not lose to Roger again like he did in Q1 where he mentally seemed OK, but in terms of lethal tennis was not there yet (that arrived when the clay season started and brilliantly he found back that form in the last 4 matches of the US Open). Let’s hope he stays healthy and will be ready to compete for Aussie Open and RG in 2018, where new chances will arrive for sure.

  6. Vamos Rafa! What a win, what a fantastic attitude throughout the entire final, superb and unimaginable three, two and one year ago. Rafa is the ultimate warrior and comeback kid. Never ever count out Rafael Nadal. Now we enjoy the rest of the season, knowing that the important stuff is in the bag. And next season we move another step closer to that slam record. Rafa can do it and will do it, Goat!

  7. Absolutely fantastic a great player a great person and a great champion what a comeback it has been for rafa.
pat cash is talking rubbish the same accusation could be laid at Murray’s door he became no 1 with out Rafa and Roger as did Novak to a certain extent but they have been found out. you can only beat who is in front of you and rafa did just that.
    Numero Uno and deservedly so

  8. Hearty Congratulations dear Rafael on your 16th Grand Slam victory.May you have more success through out the year and years to come.God bless you, your family and team.Keep on growing stronger and stronger.

  9. Rafa has shown the world why he is number 1, although there will stilll be haters (possibly Fed and Djokovic fans) who proclaim he has won the title and number 1 because of default due to the absence of others.
Let them rave on. ! My admiration for Rafa grows and grows – not just for his tennis but for his modesty in victory and the way he celebrated the win on court – no histrionics such as beating his chest, pointing to himself, bowing to the crowd with hand over his heart, etc, just raising his arms in victory and applauding the crowd.
He is a true sportsman and wonderful role model. He was sincere in his praise of Kevin Anderson, as he always is about his competitors.
What a great joy for Uncle Toni to witness this victory. He has seen Rafa grow and develop from just a little toddler to the wonderful man he is now It has been a unique partnership but I think Rafa is in good hands with Carlos Moya now for the future.
I am so pleased that my 83 year old heart still beats on to allow me to enjoy watching this talented, lovely young man play the game that has given so many people so much pleasure.Following Rafa through the good times( as well as the bad )keeps me young.
By the way, did you notice when he was presented with the $ 3.7 million cheque that he didn’t even look at it? He just stuffed it in his pocket. All he wanted was to get his hands on that trophy.!!
It’s just the love of the game and the will to win that is his motivator.

    • I’ll tell it again to whomever says Rafa won the No. 1 spot by default. Rafa, from the beginning of this year, worked his way up to No. 2. Had he not won so many titles he would not have LEAPFROGGED over everyone else. He won the No. 1 spot because HE EARNED IT.

There were comments made that Rafa won because of a weak pool of players. Weak or strong, Rafa can only play who is in front of him. He has no control over that.

I was reviewing his five-year record for the last five tournaments of the year. We all know of his many injuries but writing things down and seeing the consecutive years of injuries was a nightmare for me. If for once he can get a little help in the luck department, HE DESERVES IT.

      HAPPY SWEET 16 RAFA

  10. Congratulations Rafa.I’m special happy to watch your great play.I hope that you will not get injured least season.Good luck Rafa

  12. Congratulations Rafa. Today you gave us three sets of amazing tennis. It made me so happy when you won, but even better was to see how happy YOU were when you won! Such a joyous smile.

  13. Congratulations, Rafa! What an amazing performance. Relentless and ruthless on court!
What a battle. Winning your first hard-court title since 2014 and a GS at that. What a remarkable achievement for you and your team.

I’ll miss Uncle Toni in the player box but so glad his last time on the road with you is celebrated with this incredible victory and your 16th GS title.

I’m so over the moon regarding your 2017 comeback. Best wishes for the rest of the season.
Enjoy your celebration with family and friends. Rafa, simply the best!

  14. Rafa what a fantastic champ you are indeed.

I didn’t see the match here in Australia, but from comments above I get the feeling that it was truly fantastic.

Rest now resr and have fun with you family and friends.

I believe you and Roger are playing in Prague for the inauguration of the Neale Frazer Cup in I think September. Trust that all goes well.

    Love and prayers,
