Rafael Nadal gets most brutal Roland Garros draw you can imagine

Rafael Nadal is going for a tenth title at Roland Garros. In the open era, no player — man or woman — has ever won ten trophies at a single Grand Slam event. Let’s see will Rafa make history in Paris again!

The Roland Garros draw is out. Rafa will play in the first round against Australian Sam Groth.

Our champion, who has a 70-2 record on Parisian clay courts, was drawn in the same quarter as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and the same half as Novak Djokovic. His potential final opponents include Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka.

Rafa’s possible obstacle course to La Decima:

  • Round 1: Sam Groth
  • Round 2: Facundo Bagins
  • Round 3: Fabio Fognini
  • Round 4: Dominic Thiem
  • Quarter Final: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
  • Semi Final: Novak Djokovic
  • Final: Andy Murray

Roland Garros 2016 projected men’s singles quarterfinals:

  • Djokovic vs Berdych
  • Nadal vs Tsonga
  • Wawrinka vs Raonic
  • Murray vs Nishikori

Rafa is 15-2 on clay in Europe this year, winning titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Despite he lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in Rome in two close sets, he played his best match on any surface since winning the French Open in 2014.

All the best of luck in the world to you, Rafa!

  1. Good luck Rafa! Very tough bracket though Novak will be tough but you have more heart. And Murray is a bum. Just remember Monte Carlo! Vamos Rafa!

  2. Good luck Rafa! It will be great to see you when the 10th at the French very tough bracket though. Novak will be very tough but you have more heart. And Murray is a bum just remember Monte Carlo. Vamos Rafa King of Clay

  3. Oh welll, the weather for tomorrow is looking up , so hopefully all the matches will run on schedule and at least Andy and Rafa will be able to get some practice in before their matches

    • I am concerned about a revived Stepanek. Had rain not intervened I feel Andy would have won 4th round. By then, Stepanek probably would have been spent.

      RAFA ROCKS

  4. Hi Chandelle, I hope your right , why are they stopping , surely it would have been better to finish the set. Andy needs to get into his stride quicker tomorrow as he will have a fresh Stepanek on his hands. If it had carried on tonight I think Stepanek would have been exhausted by the 5,th set .Oh well let’s wait to see what tomorrow brings , dry warm weather would be nice , with a win for Andy and more importantly Rafa

  5. Hi Maria – i was thinking the same thing! But no way will andy allow himself to lose

  6. Oh crikey . This is a disaster , I want Rafa to win the FO with all my heart but if he does get knocked out and Andys gone as well , it’s probably Novak’s for the taking.

    • Maria, it’s still early in the tournament. I am thinking positive. Let us see how Rafa does tomorrow. Hopefully he will shine.

      VAMOS RAFA

      • Hopefully” – that’s the key word, isn’t it?

Rafa should prevail in 4 sets tomorrow – hopefully, that is!!!!!

  7. Oh my god Andy really needs to pull his finger out , I can only hope that stepanek starts to get tired soon . Only want Murray to go out if he plays against Rafa. Where’s the Andy who beat Novak the other week , this is like looking at Murray before he became one of the top 4. Margo, maybe Dr who hass been playing tricks in his Tardis Hmmmmmm

    • Maria, was just going to post his 2-set loss. I have no idea what is going on with Andy. Totally unexpected as tennis commentators, bettors, and others (including dummy me) had Andy as a strong contender. All I can say is );:(@&(;::(?!!!::44()));:;()$&@@ (in place of being a potty mouth). Let’s see if he can pull himself out of this hole.
Imagine being knocked out first match…geez….gotta feel for him. Expectations were so high. BBC went as far as asking if Andy would be new King of Clay. (The nerve!)
      I hope he pulls through.

      • Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm……..never knew you were a dummy, Margo?!!!!

But since you’ve publicly admitted that you’re one, who then am I to doubt you!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol

    • Very funny, Maria. You’re really hitting me hard these days, but DR.WHO is a patient man like the Vulture.

      My time will come………soon.

  8. Is Rafa back ,, I see a lot of the Rafa playing now that I recognize but he’s not quite where he needs to be,, see if Rafa can get there in Paris,, Vamos Rafa,,

  9. First Stan and now Andy is struggling with the heavy conditions on the court , I hope Rafa’s game isn’t affected to much .Good Luck to Rafa if he manages to get on the court tomorrow

    • Yikes, looks like Andy will lose first set.

Kei won easily in straight sets. Maria, I was temped to say Hhmmmmmmm. Don’t shoot me. But just those two letters together like that is funny.

  10. I do think Maria Sharapova can come across as stand offish, and listening to what commentators say it’s very hard to believe that she wouldn’t have been updated on banned drugs, that said she has been well know to stick up for Rafa especially where the FO is concerned and fairness. She is very much like Rafa with her ticks and habit’s. I know she is not that liked by Serena ass she was dating her ex Grigor Dimitri (awkward). Hoping the sun appears soon in Parisand, the ccondition improves for Rafa’s first match

    • Sharapova lives in the U.S. Meldonium is not an approved FDA (Food and Drug Aministration) drug. Its use is illegal in the U.S. unless, of course, she would be allowed to take is as a Russian citizen. Doubtful.
I find it inconceivable that neither she, nor anyone on her team, would not have PERUSED an email alerting players of banned drugs. To me, just doesn’t make sense.
As of now, WADA doesn’t even know how long it stays in the system. And, the number of athletes who have tested positive has grown exponentially since the ban in January. I am waiting to see what total sanctions she will receive.

  12. Great to see John McEnroe back in the commentary box , somebody who knows what he’s on about and brings a bit of humour with it

    • You’re welcome, Maria.
Yes, Rosol can be dangerous. He did beat Rafa early at Wimbledon 2012.
McEnroe is a character at times. Yes, good commentator.
Just like anyone else, tennis players will have their spats and “disagreements.”
What I will say is that I was very surprised about the harsh and vitriolic statements made by other players after her banned drug use disclosure. Their comments centered around her lack of camerady, etc., among the female players. Seems she is not liked.

      RAFA ROCKS

      • Was talking about Sharipova. Another person who strikes me as not nice.

    • MARIA ALERT lol
Correction: camaraderie (I blame it on auto-incorrect…I plead the 5th. LOL

  13. Thanks Margo , wow Stan certainly been tested today ,at one point I thought he was a gonna. I don’t expect he thought his first match would be 4hrs+ long and 5 sets. Glad Rosol’s gone though as him and Rafa are not on friendly terms

  14. At last we have a game, I wish Stan would stop the muttering and put some effort in rather than look like he couldn’t care less. Can’t see him defending his title here this year (good for Rafa ) unless he ups his game . Not a fan of Rosol’s one bit . Does anybody know how many points Stan will drop if he doesn’t win the final, and could that make Rafa go up to being seeded No 4

    • I think we can’t determine how many points Stan would lose for not defending his 2015 FO title until he drops out of this year’s FO.

Players receive a certain amount of points for each round they reach in a tournament. (Except for the final round where the winner gets more points than the runner-up.)

If Stan drops out, any points earned for reaching that round will determine how many points are to be deducted from last year’s 2,000 win points.

      • Maria, I just googled “grand slam points” ….. there you may get a better idea because I am not the best at explaining things. Hope this helps.

        RAFA ROCKS

  15. you can only play your best on the day,l now that you can go all the way will be watching you rafa, vamos rafa your always in my thoughts glennis.

  16. Vamos Rafa, I too notice how Boris Becker studies Rafa. Sometimes he glares so intensely when Rafa plays I think his eyes will bug out of his head. He is obsessed with his charge-Novak, and obsessed that Novak beats Rafa all the time. Sometimes I feel as if Novak plays tennis just to prove that he is better than Rafa and that Rafa will never win against him again. Well I got news for you Mr. Djokovic you are in for a rude awakening. Rafa, please stay healthy and believe in your magnificient ability and talent. You are a phenomenal athlete. You deserve to win your 10 French
Open and I look forward to seeing you bite th trophy this year. Good luck in your first match. I love you– and Love, Marylynn

  17. Hey sosa – we all get mad when novak beats rafa. Maria and i dislike him greatly. We have that in common at least! Lets hope rafa has a great run at rg
