Rafa’s matches this week against Verdasco and Muller are two more glaring examples of him playing quite well in the 1st set, but then dropping off a cliff in the 2nd. Which proves once again that it’s NOT about confidence. If it was about confidence, his level of play would have risen instead of fallen after his high quality opening sets.
His real problem is a lack of COMMITMENT to playing aggressive, offensive, big boy tennis. He often has that commitment when he’s trailing on the scoreboard and his back is against the wall. But, when he’s up a set or two and has some breathing room, not so much. He then reverts to his comfort zone of playing passive, defensive, little boy tennis.
Uncle Toni lets him get away with that. A super-coach such as Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander or Gustavo Kuerten would not. Either he would follow their advice to play big boy tennis, or they would leave. And that, my dear friends, makes all the difference in the world.

with that mindset of Rafa praising a 18 years old like he’s a champion, I don’t see Rafa to win the match. I hope I am wrong. he had 5 damn double faults in his match with verdasco.
For once I hope Nadal steps on the court with the attitude of a 14 time major winner, saying ‘this is not gonna happen boy’, playing agressively, no weak looks towards the box, hitting hard and deep. No more p*ssy behaviour please. Nadal is not the youngster who is allowed to be insecure!

Apart from heaping unnecessary and excessive praises on opponents, why would any sane player reveal his/her match strategy to the whole world before the match?
Short and simple replies would have been enough. Something like ”I’d try my best” or ”It’s gonna be a tough match for sure. I hope to be ready for it”
As i’ve said severally, the entirety of Rafa’s personality encompassing his antediluvian team, anachronistic strategies and high-tension style has to be overhauled intoto.
