That’s when the 16-year-old thought to himself that he should pick up the ball so Nadal wouldn’t step on it and injure himself. “At that very moment, a Lopez serve went by and hit me in the eye.” The accident caused Delage to lose most of his vision in his right eye.
Nadal had asked to meet Delage right after the accident but the ballboy was still recovering. This year, the world no.9 didn’t want to miss his chance. “He’s really nice. It was amazing,” said Gabriel Delage. “I had totally forgotten. I didn’t think it would really happen.” The ballboy later found out that Nadal had even asked about him from Cincinnati two years ago.
“Todo el mundo puede cometer errores, pero la edad no es una excusa”, aclaró el español, a raíz de la juventud e inexperiencia del australiano en el circuito.
“Espero que sea capaz de reconocer su error y de modificar su actitud. Es un fantástico jugador de tenis y, posiblemente, podría ser el N°1 en el futuro”, finalizó Nadal.

Debby – Actually, to me, Kyrgios’ behavior seems more like ‘boys will be boys’ humour from days gone by. And he’s gotten major bad publicity over it, so I wouldn’t say it was considered acceptable behavior. In fact, there really are no “bad boys” in tennis these days. If Kyrgios wants to fill that ‘love to hate’ role, he needs to start actually winning tournaments.
fwiw – Kyrgios was way out of line, but I find Stan W pretty gross too, considering he’s a man of 30 who left his wife & young child & chased after a teenage girl immediately after (if not before). The “girlfriend” in question is only 19. I hope for her sake she does go back to “banging” Kokkinakis, an age-appropriate match, instead of Stan the creeper.
The story is so heartwarming to know. Makes us really proud to be Rafa’s fans. His kind heart couples with his exceptional tennis skills make him a great champion, better yet a great person. May he stay that way, for the young generation to emulate. Vamos!

Rafael Nadal is a special person, thoughtful and kind and so tuned in to young people. The world is a better place because of him.

Yes, unfortunately this is a comment on our times. Rafa reflects a world that’s almost gone and Kyrios reflects too much of what passes for acceptable behavior these days. All we can do is voice, loudly, our support for caring, thoughtful behavior over bullying, snarkiness and arrogance.
Kudos to the Montreal crowd for showing that! Problem with using $$ as a punishment is that it is somewhat meaningless when show biz and sports so overpay the successful.
On another note – am I reading points correctly that Rafa will move into #8 spot in rankings (regardless of tonight’s results) and will be something like only 5 points below Ferrer in 7th?? Sorry Daveed, hope you’ll be back soon.
Dosent surprise me in the least ,he’s the most thoughtful sportsman on the tour ,his parents did a brilliant job of teaching Rafa how to behave and think of others ,
If only the world was full of Rafa’s!!
