PHOTOS: Rafael Nadal into Barcelona Open third round

Eight-time champion Rafael Nadal has eased into the Barcelona Open third round with a straight-sets victory over compatriot Nicolas Almagro. Our champ won 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 38 minutes.

Rafa: “I had today’s match more or less under control and I think I made very few errors. It was the first match of the week against someone who beat me last year and for whom I have maximum respect.” (via Reuters)

King of Clay could next meet No. 13 seed Fabio Fognini or qualifier Andrey Rublev.

  1. Wow, Rafa keeps getting better and better!

Serving for the match is always so difficult for any player. The opponent always
brings their best stuff in the end. But what I love about Rafa during those crucial moments
is he always maintains his composure and self-belief. He never waivers, never loses his
temper, never throws his racquet. Always the ultimate professional!

Even when leading at 5 to 1 in the 2nd set, it isn’t over until the very last point.

That last game was so dramatic. So glad Rafa held his serve after battling with Nico
for over 20 minutes! Also glad to see Nico is healthy again! Bravo, Rafa!

  2. Very impressive performance to day by Rafael, confident and self assured and back to “our Rafa”. I am so happy for him, onwards and upwards
