Rafa Nadal consoled himself after his shock first-round Wimbledon defeat by Steve Darcis by going to watch Spanish compatriot Julio Iglesias in Barcelona. The tennis star attended the gig with his girlfriend Maria Francisca Perello and was surely soothed by the pop star’s dulcet tones.
Nadal and Iglesias have history. Back in December 2011 Nadal presented his compatriot with an award for being the best-selling Spanish recording artist of all time, at home and abroad.

‘Julio can win the hearts of everyone in the world. I believe it because wherever I go, whether it’s Japan or the United States, sooner or later they’ll be playing one of his songs,’ said Nadal.
He reflected on his Wimbledon exit and tried to see the positives.
‘I am confident that I will have a good recovery and be ready for the next tournaments,’ he said.
‘I played much more than I dreamed of before the injury so that is very positive for me.
‘I tried to arrive here in as good a shape as possible, knowing that this year would probably be harder than ever, and it really was. But life continues.
‘Two weeks ago I was in a fantastic situation, winning a fantastic tournament, and two weeks later I am losing in the first round. That is sport.’

Also as a side note, Rafa and Julio Iglesias have a more personal friendship, too. In 2012 when Rafa was in the Dominican Republic receiving the keys to his house in La Romana, he stayed for a few days at Iglesias’s house in Punta Cana as a mini-vacation. 🙂
